"Io vorrei limitare al minimo possibile le prove libere, che interessano solamente agli ingegneri delle varie squadre e non ai telespettatori": così il CEO della Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali, si è espresso ai microfoni di Sky in occasione del weekend di gara della MotoGP a Portimao. Domenicali, ribadendo un concetto che aveva già espresso in precedenza, ha aggiunto che nella prossima riunione della F1 Commission proporrà cambiamenti in modo tale che “ogni volta che le monoposto scendono in pista” debbano “essere messe in condizione di lottare per qualcosa di importante, per cui valga la pena”. Ridurre il numero delle prove libere, incalza Domenicali, potrebbe “aggiungere ulteriore intensità allo show, che tutti vogliono vedere quando le auto sono in pista per correre”. Domenicali porta avanti una tendenza che è già iniziata da tempo. Dallo scorso anno, le due sessioni di prove libere del venerdì durano 60 e non 90 minuti, togliendo un’ora preziosa ai team per raccogliere dati. E nei weekend di gara con la Sprint al sabato, le sessioni di prove libere diventano solamente due, di cui una da disputare post qualifica, già in regime di parc fermé, in attesa che i cambiamenti ventilati su questo fronte siano implementati. L’effetto di questa riduzione delle prove libere è stato evidente fin dai primi weekend delle Sprint. Con un tempo minimo per provare gli assetti, chi svolge bene i compiti a casa al simulatore ha un vantaggio notevole, così come lo ha chi ha una vettura in grado di rispondere a qualsiasi esigenza in termini di assetto senza fare capricci. Non è difficile immaginare che una decisione presa per aumentare l’imprevedibilità in pista finisca invece per premiare i team con le monoposto più efficienti, come l’implacabile Red Bull RB19 di quest’anno. La necessità di offrire uno spettacolo avvincente a chi spende molto sia per seguire da casa con la pay-per-view che per vedere le monoposto in pista è comprensibile. Ma le prove libere sono uno strumento fondamentale per le scuderie, soprattutto da quando non è più possibile effettuare test privati in pista. Per una categoria come la F1, che si professa come la vetta tecnologica del motorsport, la sofisticazione ingegneristica è una caratteristica imprescindibile. E affinché non diventi secondaria, non è possibile mandare in pista le scuderie allo sbaraglio. Quanto siano importanti i collaudi in pista Domenicali lo sa molto bene, visto che ha lavorato in Ferrari quando la scuderia di Maranello disputava l’equivalente di diversi GP sulla propria pista di Fiorano per preparare al meglio le monoposto in vista delle vere gare. Ora pare dimenticarsene, ma la verità è che non tutto può essere sacrificato sull’altare dello spettacolo. Le prove libere, anche se in teoria non mettono i team in “condizione di lottare per qualcosa di importante”, all’atto pratico lo fanno. Perché in quei minuti contati in pista, si decidono i weekend di gara. Insomma, toglieteci tutto, ma non le libere.

Watch for, Domenicali, Andretti, Steiner, Haas, Cadillac to F1, f1, and f1 news Domenicali and Steiner are in a war against Andretti! In order to get on the Formula 1 grid, Andretti Global announced last month that they would work with the Cadillac Racing team from General Motors. The announcement was heard by everyone in the motorsports business, including the current F1 teams. A deal has been made with a third-party power unit supplier, and GM said it will help Andretti financially and technically. Since GM got involved, Andretti's rivals in the F1 paddock have become even more vicious. Even with the US$200 million dilution charge that a new entry would have to pay, the existing teams are not convinced they should give up revenue to a new team. Andretti had already committed to a new American headquarters, ready for future single-seater programs to join its US-based IndyCar and Indy Lights operations and UK-based Formula E participation. Most teams now believe that the series' original value was too low in light of Formula One's recent success, particularly in the United States. In the end, we can safely conclude that the existing Formula One team is clearly against Andretti Global, just as they are against adding new teams to the league. Teams can't physically block access to the paddock, but they may and will keep raising the bar until no new entrants can match their standards or any existing teams are purchased. It will be fascinating and worth keeping an eye on this situation and how it will develop during the next period. What are your thoughts on the Andretti brand joining F1? F1 Ferrari Boss Mattia Binotto shoves Stefano Domenicali at the 2019 Austin Texas F1 Grand Prix

Stefano Domenicali is most well-known for being Ferrari’s Team Principal after Jean Todt’s departure at the end of 2007, with the Italian in charge between 2008 and the end of 2013. He had worked for Ferrari since 1991. According to reports originating with Racefans.net and Racer.com, Domenicali will replace Chase Carey as Formula 1’s CEO from 2021. The appointment has not yet been made official by Formula One Management or Liberty Media. Carey has been CEO of the sport ever since Liberty Media took over as owners of Formula 1 from Bernie Ecclestone’s CVC in 2017. Having overseen the negotiations between Liberty and the teams for the finalisation of the new Concorde Agreement, Carey had indicated a desire to step aside from this role. With all the teams now signed up until the end of 2025, Carey will move into a different role with Liberty Media, which is as yet undefined. There had been speculation that Toto Wolff or Christian Horner could have been in line to move into the position, but there has apparently been a clause put into the Concorde Agreement which prevents people with very recent team affiliations getting into these positions of power...for obvious reasons. Stefano is a prime candidate as a result, as he has been without a team affiliation since early 2014. Ironically, Domenicali will be working alongside Jean Todt, at least for one year, as his predecessor as Ferrari team boss currently holds the office of the FIA presidency. This means that two Ferrari bosses head up leadership of both Formula 1's ownership and governing bodies. However, Todt cannot go for a further term when his current one ends at the conclusion of 2021 under the rules of the office. Domenicali will also be working alongside former Ferrari Technical Director Ross Brawn, who is also a Liberty employee in his role as Formula 1’s Managing Director for Motorsport. Domenicali resigned from Ferrari in early 2014, due to his apparent refusal to fire several members of technical staff at the start of the hybrid era as the Ferrari power unit was underpowered and unreliable, along with a truculent F14-T. He had a falling out with then Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemelo, leading to his resignation. Di Montezemelo himself would resign just a few months later, as tension grew between himself and his boss, FCA chairman Sergio Marchionne. Since that time, Domenicali has kept busy as he became a senior manager at Audi before moving to Lamborghini in 2016 as their Chief Executive - a role that he still holds. He has maintained ties with Formula 1, with a prominent role with the FIA as head of the single-seater commission which is responsible for the formation of new rules and regulations. He played an important part in the formation of the new technical regulations being introduced to F1 in 2022.

Malaysian Grand Prix Preview - From Melbourne to Malaysia, from cool to torrid The pace of life in Formula 1 is relentless and just a couple of days after packing away the two F138 cars and all the equipment required to run them, Scuderia Ferrari is already hard at work at the Sepang circuit on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, preparing for the second round of the World Championship, the Malaysian Grand Prix. A positive, if hot and sticky atmosphere reigns in the garage, because thanks to a second placed Melbourne podium for Fernando Alonso and a fourth place for team-mate Felipe Massa, the team heads the first published Constructors' classification of 2013. In fact, the two Ferrari men made the journey from Melbourne to Malaysia together on Tuesday and are now acclimatising to the torrid climate that will characterise this second round of the World Championship, with some physical training. "The first Grand Prix weekend of the season in Australia was a positive one for us as we had previously stated that our objective was to finish on the podium and that target was achieved," confirms Team Principal Stefano Domenicali. However, there is no room for complacency as nothing in terms of a pit lane hierarchy is set in stone. "We have witnessed a weekend that was very unusual, with qualifying on Saturday and Sunday delivering a snapshot of the order that proved to be completely different come Sunday evening after the race," adds Domenicali. "But, it was important to see both our drivers deliver strong performances, as it provides a great basis on which we can build a competitive season and I'm pleased for both of them. Seeing Ferrari heading the Constructors' Championship is a great reward for the people who have been working so hard, both here at the track and back home in Maranello. But it's only the first step in a very long season and now is the time to analyse and evaluate all the data from Melbourne in order to be immediately ready for this coming weekend in Malaysia." The Melbourne circuit is unique in many ways and Domenicali is well aware that this coming weekend will throw up a sharp contrast in terms of the challenges that await the teams. "Sepang is a very different track and our plan is to make the most of the package that we have," maintains our Team Principal. "We need to wait and see how our car will behave in what is a totally different environment: the track will make different demands on the cars to the ones we experienced in Australia, with a change in track surface and the unique weather conditions, very hot and humid, will also impact on everyone's performance this weekend. We know what is required here and we will need the usual compromise in terms of downforce levels to deal with both the tighter section and the two long fast straights." The 5.543 kilometre track can be characterised as medium to high speed, while the track surface itself is very abrasive. It puts the tyres under a lot of strain, which is why Pirelli has selected the Medium and Hard compounds for this weekend. In the cold of Melbourne, the teams saw signs of cold weather graining, whereas in the heat of Sepang, heat-induced degradation will be the order of the day, while the high speed turns generate high lateral loads on the tyres too. As Domenicali mentioned, the aero set-up has to be a compromise to deal with a mix of slow and fast sections, and when it comes to the mechanical set up, the Sepang kerbs are low and forgiving, so a stiff and low car is called for. Cooling, if not a problem, is at least a consideration, although with two long straights, the brakes get given a chance to cool down. Physically, the conditions are demanding and that goes for the crew in the garage as much as for the drivers. And let's not forget the tropical downpours, which have frequently added some unexpected spice to this race. In the ever-changing world of Formula 1, past history counts for little, but nevertheless, the Scuderia can take heart from its Malaysian track record. To date there have been fourteen Grands Prix at Sepang and the Prancing Horse has won six of them, more than any other team, dating back to Eddie Irvine's victory in the maiden event in 1999, and going through to Fernando Alonso's win last year. On that occasion, the Spaniard started from eighth on the grid, the lowest position that has ever ended in victory here. It was his third Sepang win, the first two coming with other teams in 2005 and 2007. Whatever happens on Sunday, this will be a special weekend for the man from Oviedo, as it marks his two hundredth appearance on the grid of a Formula 1 Grand Prix.
