CBT Nuggets trainer John McGovern covers how to read and understand a Linux kernel version number. The Linux kernel is obviously the heart of the Linux operating system, and it's constantly receiving improvements and version updates. Believe it or not, the numbering conventions have changed, and keeping track of the current version, as well as differentiating stable and long-term kernels, can prove to be tricky. Keeping track of version numbers for Linux kernels is made even more difficult by the fact that before version 2.6, the rules for how a development kernel was labeled changed. Watch to learn exactly what rules the Linux kernel versioning system now follows and make sense of the surprisingly complicated numbering system. Why Linux is ACTUALLY GNU/Linux

Check out the full Linux video here - The Making of Linux, The World's First Open-Source Operating System: 🤍 I’m sure a handful of people commented on my full video “it’s not Linux! It’s GNU/Linux!” It’s a bit more nuanced than than. The Linux kernel is just Linux, but what most people refer to as Linux today, the distributions, is GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. GNU played an incredibly important role in the development of Linux as we know it. As a matter of fact, in the “Notes for linux release 0.01”, Torvalds lists the GNU software that is required to run Linux: "Sadly, a kernel by itself gets you nowhere. To get a working system you need a shell, compilers, a library etc. These are separate parts and may be under a stricter (or even looser) copyright. Most of the tools used with linux are GNU software and are under the GNU copyleft. These tools aren't in the distribution (although, I think a binary of GNU’s bash shell actually was) - ask me (or GNU) for more info." In 1992, Torvalds suggested releasing the kernel under the GNU General Public License instead of its very own license it had been using, and did so that December. Linux and GNU developers worked to integrate GNU components with Linux to make a fully functional and free operating system. 🐱‍🚀 GitHub: 🤍 🐦 Twitter: 🤍 💼 LinkedIn: 🤍 📸 Instagram: 🤍 📓 Learning Resources: My Favorite Machine Learning Course: 🤍 Open Source Computer Science Degree: 🤍 Python Open Source Computer Science Degree: 🤍 Udacity to Learn Any Coding Skill: 🤍 👨‍💻 My Coding Gear: My NAS Server: 🤍 My Hard Drives: 🤍 My Main Monitor: 🤍 My Second Monitor: 🤍 My Standing Desk: 🤍 My PC Build: 🤍 My AI GPU: 🤍

The Making of Linux: The World's First Open-Source Operating System

GNU/Linux was the first complete open source and free operating system. The development of the Linux kernel and the GNU/Linux OS is one that every tech enthusiast should know. From a hobby project in 1991 to one of the most widely used operating systems in the world, the development of Linux is a remarkable story of collaboration, innovation, and open-source software. Linux, for those that don’t know, is a community of open-source operating systems developed on top of the Linux kernel - the core of the operating system, responsible for managing resources, providing access to hardware, and communicating with other software. One could say it all started in 1991 when Linus Torvalds, a computer science student at the University of Helsinki, started working on the operating system as a hobby project. He was frustrated with the proprietary nature of existing operating systems and wanted to create a free and open-source alternative that anyone could use and contribute to. A kernel that could be independent of any OS and be used on his hardware, the new Intel 80386 microprocessor. But it began 22 years earlier. This is the story of the development of the Linux kernel and the GNU/Linux operating system. I hope you enjoyed it. Making these videos about computer science history is quickly becoming a passion of mine, with many more to come, so if you liked this one, subscribe to the channel as I’m sure you’ll like the ones to come, like when we dive into the GNU project. Linus Torvalds transformed technology twice — first with the Linux kernel, which helps power the Internet, and again with Git, the source code management system used by developers worldwide. In a rare interview with TED Curator Chris Anderson, Torvalds discusses with remarkable openness the personality traits that prompted his unique philosophy of work, engineering and life. "I am not a visionary, I'm an engineer," Torvalds says. "I'm perfectly happy with all the people who are walking around and just staring at the clouds ... but I'm looking at the ground, and I want to fix the pothole that's right in front of me before I fall in." A new Linux kernel has been released, even though its a major version bump the changes are not so major, mostly performance improvements for high core CPU's, a new scheduler system, and support for newer hardware. I also talk about future 6.x releases which will start including kernel drivers written in Rust. what is kernel space and user space ? In computer operating system , virtual memory is divided into two parts , user space and kernel space. Kernel space has extra security. So, only kernel runs in this space with supervisor mode. As user space doesn't have any security , so kernel runs in user space as well. User applications runs with limited privilege , and each application has its own virtual memory space. So, it runs only in user space. User application gets the service from kernel using, system calls. #shorts #kernel #linux #bydubebox

Tutorial: Building the Simplest Possible Linux System - Rob Landley, se-instruments.com This tutorial walks you through building and booting the simplest possible Linux system, first under QEMU and then on real hardware. We cover kernel configuration and building, native vs cross compiling, initramfs creation (and other root filesystem options), installing and booting, the init process and system bringup, running an app, adding an example server (sshd), and finally we'll add a native toolchain to compile "hello world" on the target. Rob Landley I used to maintain busybox and a tinycc fork, currently maintain toybox and aboriginal linux, was briefly linux-kernel documentation maintainer, made initramfs use tmpfs, co-founded Penguicon, inexplicably wrote stock market investment columns for The Motley Fool for a few years long ago, youtube video of me throwing liquid nitrogen into a swimming pool has been viewed over 10 million times... you know, the usual.
