In this video, I’m going to show you how much you need in order to retire off SCHD and also how soon you'll be able to retire. SCHD is currently one of the most popular dividend-growth ETFs among investors, for several really good reasons. It currently offers the highest dividend yield among many of the most popular dividend-growth ETFs that exist. And if you happen to be interested, I recently did a video where I compared the most popular dividend ETFs to each other, looking at a bunch of different metrics, including dividend growth, diversification, overall returns, and so on: 🤍 But in this video, we’re going to see how quickly someone would be able to retire from their job and live solely off the dividend distributions of SCHD. For this video, we’re going to make a couple of assumptions. First, we’re going to assume that SCHD is the only investment you have in your portfolio. Now, because this is a diversified ETF, if someone wanted to only invest in SCHD, then I really wouldn’t see much of an issue with that. I always advocate for having multiple investments in your portfolio, but SCHD currently holds 104 different dividend-paying stocks. So if SCHD were the only thing someone wanted to hold, then that would be sufficient, in my opinion. Second, we’re going to assume that you’ll want to make $100,000 a year in dividends. I know that sounds like a lot of money, and if you want to aim to live off less, then that’s great. But as we’ll see, depending on the number of years in the future, a hundred grand might not be as well off as you’d likely be now. 🤍 #dividendinvesting #dividends #dividendstocks
SCHD ETF may not be the best dividend ETF but it sure is a top contender based on the low fees and comprehensive methodology that offers a reasonably high yield and reasonable dividend growth. What is the best dividend ETF? That's a topic for a coming video, but today we're focused on how the SCHD ETF is structured. Plenty of newbie retail investors are attracted to SCHD, based on all the searches we see for SCHD stock. It's based on the Dow Jones U.S. 100 Dividend Index which selects stocks that have paid a dividend for at least 10 years in a row (not increased, that's an important distinction that wasn't raised in the video) and are above a market cap of $500 million. Other factors are taken into account such as yield, 5-year growth, and trading volume. Once the 100 stocks are selected, they need to far fall from grace before they're kicked out of the index. There’s been a lot of controversy this year surrounding one of the most popular dividend-growth ETFs out there, which is SCHD. The Schwab US dividend equity ETF has been underperforming a lot in 2023 when compared to the S&P 500 as well as other dividend growth ETFs. A lot of people have been discouraged by the performance of SCHD, and some people are considering or have even already sold out of it in hopes of finding a better-performing dividend ETF. So in today’s video, I thought it would be a good idea to take another look at this fund and try to determine why it’s been underperforming and if there’s still hope for this fund going forward. Most people watching this are probably familiar with this fund. It’s a passively managed ETF that tracks the total return of the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index. This index holds a lot of slow-growth blue-chip stocks that have consistently grown their dividends over a long period of time. The majority of what this fund holds are dividend aristocrats and dividend kings, which are companies that’ve increased their dividends every year for decades. Today, SCHD is one of the largest dividend ETFs and one of the largest ETFs in existence, having over $46 billion in total assets under management. What is going on with dividend ETFs, At a time where investors seek these assets for safety and protection, they seem to be doing the exact opposite. And as we all know, these dividend ETFs are known to provide income and protection simply because of the nature surrounding dividend stocks.
