We took a ride on the world-famous Goodyear Blimp as it flew above the Daytona International Speedway where it provided aerial coverage for NASCAR in February. Our journey began at the Blimp Base in Pompano Beach, Florida — from there, the Blimp flew 200 miles north to a small airport in New Smyrna, where it would call home for the weekend. We got to spend about five hours in the Blimp, which was updated in 2014 in collaboration with the Zeppelin company. The new model isn't technically a Blimp, due to the internal structure inside its balloon, or envelope. This is what it's like to fly on the iconic Goodyear Blimp, which isn't accessible to the public — only the crew and invited guests are allowed to go for a ride. #Goodyear #Blimp #BusinessInsider Business Insider tells you all you need to know about business, finance, tech, retail, and more. The age of rigid and semi-rigid airships like the famous Hindenburg was a brief but exciting time, as the impressive ships promised to be part of a technological revolution. In the late 1920s the US began testing their use as flying aircraft carriers, able to launch and recover planes from the air. This led to the construction of two airships: the USS Akron and its sister, USS Macon, among the largest airships ever built. This is original content based on research by The History Guy. The history of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the United States are intertwined. NOAA’s roots date back to 1807, when Thomas Jefferson established the nation’s first scientific agency, the Survey of the Coast. Since then, NOAA has evolved to meet the needs of a changing country. NOAA maintains a presence in every state and has emerged as an international leader on scientific and environmental matters. The Treasures of NOAA’s Ark traveling exhibit showcases an array of heritage artifacts which tell the story of how the people, technology and resources shaped NOAA and its predecessor agencies over the past two decades. Nonetheless, the R.101 disaster still remains the biggest tragedy in history among commercial airships. On October 4th, 1930, the giant airship R-101 set to fly from London to India. At that time, it was the largest and arguably most luxurious airship in the history of aviation. The R-101 was the first link in the British Empire's ambitious plan to create a worldwide network of air routes and build a fleet of giant airships. Blimps were once at the forefront of aviation—at least before airplanes innovated past their lighter-than-air technology. Now, airships are often used for advertising or aerial broadcasting, which is exactly how Goodyear utilizes its fleet of airships. In fact, there are only 124 pilots with a rating to fly an airship, and there are a mere 39 registered airships in the U.S., according to the FAA. Now, a small handful of companies want to change that. Blimps are more carbon efficient than planes or boats, and they can be used for tourism and cargo transport, not to mention military purposes. In this video we look at the modern airship. There are plenty of new airships being designed at the moment across the world. They make use of new age materials, from carbon composites to multi-layered fabrics. There is also the use of electric propulsion and hull embedded solar panels/ This makes perfect sense as airships have a large area. Many of the modern airships are hybrid airships, meaning at least some of their lift comes from thrust vectoring or aerodynamic lift. Based on one of the modern airships, sky cruises are also being considered which will start as early as the year 2023

From the tethered observation balloons of World War 1 to the iconic Goodyear blimps, airships have graced our skies for over a century, offering unique points of view and performing crucial roles in surveillance. Then, in 2023, the concept reemerged in the remote deserts of Northwestern China, where a seemingly barren landscape harbors an enigmatic blimp floating in solitude. Captured for the first time by the gaze of orbiting satellites, this clandestine vehicle, an enormous military airship, lay concealed until very recently. Beyond its grandeur, the airship is located in a base with a colossal hangar spanning nearly 900 feet. The revelation of the desert titan's presence has sparked endless online conversation, with some hinting that China is on the precipice of a new age in airborne surveillance. And as the enigmatic story continues to unfold, the unsettling implications of China's latest sky-bound titan come into focus… - Dark Footage showcases the most unbelievable photos and videos from history while telling the stories behind the camera. In the late 1920s the whole world was experimenting with airships and lighter-than-air travels- Germany had an impressive fleet of zeppelins which would eventually culminate in the Hindenburg and Graf Zeppelin. But Britain experimented too, and the pride of the Imperial Airship program were the airships R100 and R101. Design faults and methodology flaws soon set in and the R101 set out in a dangerous condition leading to the largest loss of life in any airship accident. Let's take a look at what went wrong and how Britain's greatest airship was seemingly doomed from the start.
