Boeing’s 747 is one the most recognizable planes to take to the skies with its iconic hump, four engines, extensive landing gear and sheer size. Since its first commercial flight in 1970, Boeing’s 747 jumbo jet has flown more than 3.5 billion passengers. But over the last few decades, airlines have looked for more ways to cut costs and to make airplanes more efficient. Two engine jets can now fly near the same capacity and further than older four engine planes like Boeing’s 747 and the Airbus A380. CNBC visited Boeing's Everett, Washington factory to see the last 747 roll off the production line. It will go to Atlas Air for cargo deliveries. They’ve finally released their secret weapon which comes with tons of pleasant surprises that will win over a majority of Boeing’s loyal customers. So, how the new Airbus A350 is going to end Boeing’s dominance? The A350 was born at a time when the Airbus was placed under great pressure by its major competitor, Boeing. This story goes back to 2004 when the Airbus A330 family was the rave. It was the model that was bringing in the money for Airbus. Just then, Boeing turned the tide and introduced the Boeing 787 and the 777 models, majorly wide-body aircraft that could carry between 250-300 passengers. Somehow, this factor drew more passengers away from airlines that relied on the smaller Airbus A330 to airlines that had resorted to using the wider-bodied Boeing 787 for long-haul travel. While at Dubai Airshow 2021 I visited the Boeing 777X. This is the first time Boeing has allowed visitors to get onboard the airplane! Let’s find out what the inside of the 777X is like? It is an experimental airplane, with no fancy interiors but a lot of workstations, terminals and water barrel tanks. I spoke with Boeing’s test engineers, pilots and commercial staff on the 777X testing and certification program. Check out the cockpit, folding wingtip, engine and test instruments inside the aircraft. Boeing expects the B777X to complete certification in 2023. They had some of the best fighters and attack aircraft in the military world, but one thing it really lacked was a big, heavy, strategic bomber. The most numerous large bomber in the Soviet arsenal was the Petlyakov Pe-8, but that was then retired before the end of the Second World War. That left the Soviet Union with virtually nothing, and Josef Stalin wasn’t happy about that and wanted a new, strategic bomber for his country.Under Lend Lease, Stalin had tried to procure the Boeing B-29 Superfortress from the United States. But America wasn’t willing to provide Stalin with some bombers, refusing twice to provide an increasingly hostile nation with, at the time, one of its most advanced aircraft. Things would soon change though after a few B-29s were in fact forced to land in the Soviet Union, thanks to various issues, as they returned from missions. That opened the door for Stalin to not only acquire some B-29s, but to create Russia’s own version of the aircraft. This would become the Tupolev Tu-4, or Bull as NATO would call it.How Russia even got hold of the B-29 is itself quite interesting. During 1944, the Americans were conducting bombing missions against Japan, and the B-29 was the aircraft carrying out those missions. However, on some missions, the odd B-29 would have various issues returning to their bases. In total, three B-29s were eventually forced to make emergency landings in the Soviet Union while a fourth one crashed on Soviet territory after its crew bailed out. This was a gift from God for Stalin, who now had three complete B-29s plus a fourth that was still usable for spares.The three that could fly were flown to the Tupolev OKB. One was then dismantled, one became a flight tester and the other was just left as it was, grounded, for cross-reference. The crash damaged B-29 would become a spares donor. That final B-29 was eventually returned to the USA, along with its crew. But Stalin refused to send the three airworthy B-29s back, citing the Soviet-Japanese Neutrality pact. The Soviet’s also spun a story that the three aircraft were too badly damaged to be flown and returned, all the while, Andrei Tupolev and his team were working on their own version of the bomber.Stalin wanted the Tu-4 developed and built as quickly as possible, and a mammoth reverse-engineering program thus began. This involved 900 factories and research institutes, to help carry out the work. One issue the Soviet Union had to overcome was that the American’s had used imperial measurements to build the B-29 while the Soviet Union used the metric system. New materials such as alloys were thus brought into production for the first time in the Soviet Union, and thus there were fears the copy would be too heavy. Amazingly though, the Tu-4 was only 750 lbs heavier than the B-29, less than 1%.Tupolev had to fight to use sometimes better equipment than what was on the American bomber as Stalin wanted the aircraft to be effectively an exact clone. Even the usage of Soviet made parachutes had to gain approval. Of course, some things understandably needed changing, with the Wright R-3350 engine replaced by the Soviet Shvetsov Ash-73, and the remote-controlled gun turrets now had Soviet Nudelman NS-23 23 mm cannons, not .50 caliber machine guns. The Tu-4 would first take to the skies on May 19th 1947.The first time the West learned of the Tu-4 was during the 1947 Tushino Aviation Day parade on August 3rd that year. Three aircraft flew overhead, which the West assumed were the three B-29s that Russia had refused to return to America. However, when a fourth one appeared a few minutes later, there was shock, and a sudden realization. The Soviet Union had clearly created a reverse-engineered copy of the B-29. This sent the United States Air Force into a panicked frenzy, knowing that the Tu-4 could easily attack Chicago and Los Angeles on a one-way mission. Stalin had just stunned the West in one fell swoop.Of course, the Tu-4 would not stay as such an advanced aircraft for long. The Soviet Union built 847 Tu-4s, although most were quickly withdrawn in the 1950s by aircraft such as the Tu-16 Badger jet bomber and the Tu-95 Bear turboprop. The final Tu-4s flown on into the 1960s, but they were only used as transport or airborne laboratory aircraft at that point. The manner in which the Soviet Union pulled off this reverse-engineered shock was in many ways impressive, and it was certainly one giant middle finger to America from Stalin for not allowing him to purchase the B-29. #military

The engineering division dedicated the number 700 to jet-engined aircraft. Boeing's marketing division realized that the name 700 for their first jet aircraft would sound boring, so they suggested the name to be the 707, which had quite a nice ring to it.
