⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ In today’s video, we will discuss ZFS file system, its structure, peculiarities, and downsides. ZFS or Zettabyte File System is a special file system initially created by Sun Microsystems for the operating system called Solaris. It supports huge amounts of data, combines the concepts of a file system, physical disk and volume manager, and offers simple management methods for storage volumes. It is a next generation file system initially designed for NAS solutions with improved security, reliability and performance. Unlike many other systems, ZFS is a 128-bit file system offering a virtually unlimited capacity. ZFS is an open-source project licensed under CDDL (Common Development and Distribution License). If you want to use ZFS out of the box, you’ll have to install either FreeBSD or an operating system using the illumos kernel (illumos is a fork of the OpenSolaris kernel). If you want to use ZFS on Ubuntu, you need to add the support features manually - but that’s a pretty easy thing to do and it involves running a few commands. We will explore it in detail a bit later, but now let’s talk about pros and cons of this file system. 👉 Hetman RAID Recovery – 🤍 👉 Why is ZFS File System in Linux Ubuntu So Good? - 🤍 ❗️❗️❗️ HELP THE UKRAINIAN ARMY ❗️❗️❗️ Make a contribution to charity fund "COME BACK ALIVE" - 🤍 📚 Content: 00:00 – Intro 01:17 - ZFS advantages 03:00 - ZFS limitations 04:26 - Installing ZFS on Ubuntu 06:24 - How to create RAID-z 08:47 - How to create, roll back and remove ZFS snapshots 10:22 - Sending and receiving ZFS 11:18 - ZFS data compression 12:16 - Conclusion How to Recover Data from a RAID-z Array, ZFS File System, and a NAS with TrueNAS Core - 🤍 Top Tools to Recover Data from ZFS Drives. Which Linux filesystem is best in 2022?

16.02.2022

Today I am exploring 4 well known filesystem for Linux, and putting each one to the test: Btrfs, ext4, ext4 w/o journaling, xfs and openzfs. All of them are being tested on hardware, running the latest versions in the Debian 11 repos. The benchmark test I am using is iozone 3.493 the latest version of the software. You can find my benchmark scripts on Gitlab. I am performing 13 tests which are included in iozone to simulate workloads of different types to see how well each filesystem performs. This video is based around a question I received from one of my viewers (and because its been a year since I updated the benchmarks). However, the main reason is after watching last Saturdays Linux Saloon, where some folks were making recommendations to use a particular filesystem, and making claims for performance that were unsubstantiated. As an engineer claims without facts always make me suspicious. Oddly enough marketing sometimes uses that method of hyping a product beyond its capabilities. So I wanted to know the truth. How well does btrfs actually perform against the older filesystems in linux? Hope you enjoy the video as much as I did making it. btrfs development website: 🤍 iozone3 website: 🤍 Support me on Patreon: 🤍 Follow me: Twitter 🤍djware55 Facebook:🤍 Discord: 🤍 Gitlab: 🤍 "Brightly Fancy" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License 🤍 "Militaire Electronic" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License 🤍 Werq by Kevin MacLeod Link: 🤍 License: 🤍 Industrial Cinematic by Kevin MacLeod Link: 🤍 License: 🤍 Music Used in this video "NonStop" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License #btrfs #zfs #filesystems

Update Oct. 11, 2022: I've used this method to officially install ZFS on Debian on bare metal. It is now my main OS configuration. So this works. :) A guide on how to install Debian 11.4 from the command line using ZFS. You can use the debootstrap tool, command line, and apt; no installer required. Use this method to make a completely customized, from-scratch Debian 11.4 install using ZFS, something which I had a lot of fun trying to find precise guides for myself. Note: I'll be using the backports version of ZFS for Debian, as this is the version recommended by the Debian developers themselves. You can use the version in the stable repository instead if you want to, just bundle it with the kernel and don't use the backports repository. Fully-written-out guide can be found here: 🤍 0:34 Start of installation 1:58 Going to wiki and updating apt 3:20 Installing ZFS on the live environment 4:39 Partitioning 6:45 Build ZFS filesystem 7:48 Subvolumes 8:05 Mounting the other partitions 9:12 Debootstrap 10:24 Adding apt sources to machine 10:48 Mounting pseudo-filesystems and hardware. Most times your workstation file system is just ext4 and that's fine. Most servers can do fine with that as well. If you want snapshots, block-level replication and flexible volume partitioning, you should consider ZFS. I'll cover how to set up, typical snapshot usage, and how to grow the file system. Plus: your questions!

Dan Langille thinks ZFS is the best thing to happen to filesystems since he stopped using floppy disks. ZFS can simplify so many things and lets you do things you could not do before. If you’re not using ZFS already, this entry-level talk will introduce you to the basics. Things we will cover include: a short history of the origins an overview of how ZFS works replacing a failed drive why you don’t want a RAID card scalability data integrity (detection of file corruption) why you’ll love snapshots sending of filesystems to remote servers creating a mirror how to create a ZFS array with multiple drives which can lose up to 3 drives without loss of data. mounting datasets anywhere in other datasets using zfs to save your current install before upgrading it simple recommendations for ZFS arrays why single drive ZFS is better than no ZFS no, you don’t need ECC quotas monitoring ZFS This talk is designed to get you interested in ZFS and see the potential for making your your data safer and your sysadmin duties lighter. If you come away with half the enthusiasm for ZFS that Dan has, you’ll really enjoy ZFS and appreciate how much easier it makes every-day tasks. Dan Langille Dan Langille first started with Unix-like operating systems sometime in the early 1980s. In 1998, he discovered FreeBSD on a near-daily basis after needing a firewall for his ADSL connection. From that start, he began several online journals, founded two highly successful open source conferences, and eventually turned his hobby into a profession. Dan now works as a sysadmin for a widely-known infosec company and is frequently impressed by those he works with. When not running conferences or working, Dan blogs about this activities. He wishes he did more mountain biking.
