You want to sound like a native speaker, but you don't know how to improve your pronunciation! Here's a little secret: the fastest way to get better pronunciation is to work on your vowel sounds. In this video, I will teach you how to pronounce four vowels that are common in both British and American English. We'll be looking at back vowels. You'll learn by seeing what my mouth, lips, and tongue are doing when I pronounce these vowel sounds, then you'll practice saying them by doing the same with your mouth. Often, English learners don't notice the difference between these sounds, and that might be why you aren't saying them correctly. We'll compare these similar vowel sounds to make those differences clear. I will show you the different spellings of these sounds in English and you will learn what the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) symbols for these vowels are. You should also watch my other video on FRONT VOWEL SOUNDS: 🤍 Those are just as important! 🤍 TRANSCRIPT Hello. My name is Emma, and in today's video we are going to learn about pronunciation, specifically how to pronounce back vowels. Okay? So, whether you are learning British English, Canadian English, American English, whatever English you're learning, these sounds exist in all of them. Okay? So it doesn't matter what type of... What dialect you're learning. You will find these sounds in many different dialects. Okay, so to get started let's talk about: What are vowels? So I have here "a", "e", "i", "o", "u", and sometimes "y". These are what we call vowels in English. Okay? So, these make a certain type of sound where usually you... You have a lot of air coming into your mouth from the back of your throat. So it's not so important how... Like, what a vowel is. The main thing is to remember that "a", "e", "i", "o", "u", and sometimes "y" are vowels. Whatever is a letter that isn't one of these is called a consonant, so for example: "s", "t", "d", "f". These are all consonants. Okay, so let's get started by looking at this and thinking: What is a consonant and what is a vowel? So we have here the word: "drew". Can you tell me: What is the vowel in this word: "drew"? If you said this, you're correct. Okay? The "d", "r", and the "w", they're consonants, and the "e" is a vowel. We have the word here: "foot". So what's the vowel? In this case it's the o's and "f" and "t" are consonants. "Hello", the "e" is a vowel and so is the "o". "All", in this case the "a" is the vowel. "Jaw", and "clock". Okay, so these are the different vowels in English. Today we are going to be looking at four of the vowel sounds that happen in the back of your mouth. So I'll explain that in a second, but first I want you to look at these four words: "foot", "food", "foe", "flock". What is the same in these words? If you look at the spelling, all these words have an "o" in the spelling. Now, do we pronounce the "oo" the same way? Listen carefully. Is the "o" pronounced the same in each of these words? "Foot", "food", "foe", "flock". The "o" is actually pronounced differently in these words, which is why you can't always depend on spelling in English to help you with your pronunciation. Okay? So I'm going to teach you how to... You know, some tips on how to do these different pronunciations and how to know when to pronounce which sounds. Okay. So, before we get to these different vowel sounds we're going to practice today, I just wanted to tell you some general things about pronouncing vowels. A lot of students, they don't know what they're doing with their mouth when they're pronouncing. It's very important to pay attention to what your mouth is doing and what your tongue is doing when you actually pronounce something. Okay? This will really help you improve your pronunciation. It's also a good idea maybe to use a mirror in order to look and become aware of what this area is doing to make the sound. So, when you're thinking about your lips it's important to think: Are your lips spread, like: "cheese", or are your lips...? So this would be spread. Or are your lips like closer together, like: "food", "oo"? "ee", "oo", notice the difference? So that's one thing to look at: Are your lips spread like "ee" or are they close together like "oo"? Okay. How open is your mouth? Is something you want to look at. Is it not very open, like: "oo"? Or is it very open, like: "ah"? Okay? How open is your mouth? The other thing you want to pay attention to is your tongue. So, these are your lips. I'm not a great artist, I know. These are your teeth, this is your chin, your neck, and this red... Red thing is your tongue. Is your tongue touching your teeth, is your tongue touching the top of your mouth, or is your tongue hanging out kind of close to the back of your mouth?

How do you know if a word in English is pronounced with the long vowel sound or the short vowel sound? For example, “cut” and “cute” are pronounced differently, but which one has the long u sound? It may seem obvious with a short, familiar word, but what if you encounter a new word that you have never seen before? There is a quick an easy trick I have found that will give you the right answer most of the time. Watch this lesson to learn one pronunciation trick that will change your life! Then take the quiz at 🤍 . WATCH NEXT: 1. TURN NOUNS & VERBS INTO ADJECTIVES: 🤍 2. HOW TO PRONOUNCE J & Y IN ENGLISH: 🤍 TRANSCRIPT Buh-clue. Hi. I'm Ronnie. I have something that... Oh my god, this is amazing. Honestly, this lesson will change your life. It changed my life when my good friend, Leaf, told me about this. Leaf, thank you; grammar god, you are pronunciation god - Leaf. Awesome. So, I've been trying to figure this out for ages, years, maybe 100 years because I'm a vampire, and I got it. Thank you. Are you confused about the pronunciation of vowels in English? So, for example, we have a long vowel sound, and a long vowel sound means that the vowel sounds like its alphabet name. So, for example: "a". But in English, we also have: "aw" and "a". Different ways to pronounce the vowels. One of them is a long vowel sound, so "a" is pronounced like "a". Then we also have a short vowel sound where "a" is going to be pronounced like: "ah". And how do you know when you read a new word to say it like "a" or "ah"? I have the answer. Oh, it's amazing. I... Okay, I get really excited about things a little bit too much; but this, I'm just super excited about it. And I want to teach you this - and, geez, it's going to change the way that you read things, the way that you learn English. So, give me some money or something. Just, enjoy. Listen. It's amazing. So, we have some guidelines. Now, I want to make perfectly clear that people like to say "grammar rules", and Ronnie hates rules. I'm Ronnie. I do not like rules because they're made to be broken; and in English, there's always exceptions to rules. So, you study a rule and you learn it, and then you go: "Oh", but no - sorry; that's an exception. And then you say: "Why?" Maybe you ask someone, maybe you ask your teacher: "Teacher, why?" and the teacher goes: "I don't know." So, please think of these as only guidelines; life-changing guidelines, though. Okay? I'm telling you. So, we have words that have two vowels. Okay? So: "a", "e", "i", "o", "u", and sometimes "y" are vowels. But this is our guideline: If in the word you have two vowels, the first... Oh, I'm sorry. The first vowel sound... The first vowel in the word is going to sound like its alphabet name or it's going to sound like a long vowel sound. The second vowel, it's silent; we don't even say the second vowel. Crazy. So, in English, if there's an "e" at the end of the word - we don't say it. In all of the other languages of the world, we say all the vowels; but English, oh no. The "e" is silent; we don't say that. So, if you have two vowels in the word, for example: "a" and "e", we're going to say the first vowel like it sounds like in the alphabet, so "a". We're going to say: "ba", and we do not say: "bak-e"; we say "bake". So, the first vowel is going to sound like the alphabet: "bake". What about this one? We don't say: "fah-me", like "ah"; we say: "fame". And, again, we don't say the last vowel in the word. So, this works with two-vowel words. The "a" we pronounce like an "a", and the "e" or the second vowel is silent. One more time the rule; it's life-changing. The first vowel sounds like its alphabet name, the second vowel is silent; we don't say it. Let's try this again. So, this is "a". The next letter. What's this vowel sound or what's this sound in the English alphabet? "A", "e". So, we say: "these". We don't say: "the-se", "the-se". "Look at the-se. Look at these." So, again, we're going to say the "e" like an "e", and the second "e" is silent. This is amazing. Woo-hoo. This word. So, you look: "dre-am". "I had an amazing dre-am last night; I was flying." But it's actually just a dream. So, one vowel we're going to say "e", the second vowel is silent. So, we don't say: "dre-am"; we say: "dream". "I had a dream." Did you have a dream last night or now? Are you imagining this? No. No, no, no. This is real. Get back into this. It's amazing. Let's see with this letter. What letter is this? Now, this is hard for you guys because in your languages maybe this is "uh" and this is "e", but in English, this is "i". So, watch this trick. Put an eye-woo-hoo-on your "i". […]

A good way to distinguish sounds is to use minimal pairs. Here are some for you to practise: “think" and "sink” “thing" and "sing” "mouth" and "mouse" “thick" and "sick”
I make music too! Check it out! 🤍 A short film for THTR 1020. (Speaking begins at 1:17) For clarification: Many words spoken in the video are actual English words. WHERE IS THE MOST INTERESTING PLACE YOU'VE TAUGHT? - That would be a one-to-one in a young Italian man’s flat in southern Italy. When he invited me to teach him at his home, I stupidly thought that Mamma would be there cooking the lunch, but no, it was a bachelor pad and no sign of Mamma! I eventually left having learned more about Italian customs than he had learned English! BEST TEACHING MOMENT? - One of my greatest achievement was when a couple of very naughty teenage Belgian students were sent here to England to learn English. They had been expelled from several schools in their own country and this was their last chance to prove themselves. After a few months of playing around in different levels, and coming close to being expelled again, they eventually ended up in my FCE class. Now they had two chances – respect their teacher and learn something or go back to Belgium. Well, they did go back to Belgium but not before they had passed their FCE! They became my two favourite students of all time. I love a challenge! HOW MANY STUDENTS HAVE YOU TAUGHT? Over 10 thousand WHAT'S YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING TEACHER MOMENT? - It happened during a DELTA observed lesson. One of my students happened to suffer from Tourette’s syndrome. Of course, I had no reason to worry, I had mentioned the fact in my lesson plan, and anyway, this student had never caused a problem before. However, today was different. Very different. Upon eliciting the required information from him – not wanting to leave him out – instead of answering the question in his usual fashion, he suddenly exhumed a torrent of swear words from somewhere deep within himself. After this cathartic experience he looked very pleased with himself but, unfortunately, this was not really the answer I was looking for. Everything went quiet, I looked over at the examiner who looked rather shocked. It certainly wasn’t your run-of-the-mill DELTA exam! BUT I passed! HOW CAN YOU CONTACT ME?
