I felt so inspired from my ZEN coasters and the edge that I carved that it got me thinking about pendants. Then when I was editing my Scotland film and remembered the Sea Glass that I found at Dunnet Bay Beanch .. well, I had to create these. I had the idea to carve the edges down as I did in the Zen coasters and then sand the pieces down to create a Frosted Glass effect. I think they look like Sea Glass I hope you do too. I use a casting resin to cast and a doming resin for doming. Casting resin is usually low in viscosity and works very well in molds without much issue with the bubbles. Also the low viscosity will allow the resin to reach detailed area of the mold. Doming resin is thick in viscosity and holds its shape very nicely. It creates a full dome and tends to hold the surface tension much better than low viscosity resin. So lower risk of the resin dripping off the sides. It also gives the piece a smooth, flawless finish. EDIT PLEASE READ at 11:45, I said I used 1/8 inch hole punch when I meant to say 1/16 inch. Sorry for the confusion! You can also sand the frame surface where the plastic film is going to lay on to increase overall adhesion. Normally this is not a necessary step if you’re sealing/doming on a piece that hasn’t reached its full cured state (which takes about 3 to 7 days). If your resin has way past the soft cured stage and is fully cured, then I recommend the sanding. Many commercial shaker resin molds have a slit or a notch for the needle for filling the shaker liquid. I hate this because I can never seal it properly using that. So I normally fill it in with resin. Check out this video on how I do it: 🤍 (At 3:47 mark) I’ve learned how to seal properly through trial and error. I’ve also learned one of the techniques from other YouTuber, MoultingRook. A lot of you have noticed how shiny my charms have become in some of my other videos, so here is the tutorial showing you exactly how I do it. While I do really like polyurethane as a glaze, I trialled UV resin about a year ago and love it so much that I haven't looked back. Hello, people of the internet! In this tutorial I'm showing you how to make faux resin gems, charms or buttons using hot glue! Resin is awesome, but it's not very cheap, especially if you just want to make a few small things with it. There are alternatives, like dimensional glue, but to be honest, I didn't have so much luck with it. So for this alternative I'm using almost transparent hot glue - I don't know how common it is in your country, but I was surprised to find it in Austria for really cheap! You can get it online as well of course. The cool thing about this craft is that you can customise the charms in so many ways. And you can use them for a ton of things as well: Make pins and badges, jewelry, keychains, stick them on cards, use the gems for costumes, as tokens for games etc. Seriously, the list is endless! Thank so much for watching my first resin tutorial video! Keep in mind that I am by no means a professional and I have only been doing resin for a short amount of time. But I hope you enjoyed my video anyway. TIPS AND TRICKS: Safety Equipment - I can't stress wearing a mask enough! I have never really had any problems with resin coming into contact with my skin (I am very careful and if I ever get it on my hand I always wash them with soap straight away) but I have had a problem with fumes. Even though my resin is odorless, it still gives off pretty powerful fumes during the mixing process due to the chemical reaction. The first two times I worked with resin I did not wear a mask and I felt really sick later in the day. I had a headache and felt nauseous. I could only put this feeling down to the resin! This may not happen to everyone (I might just be super sensitive) but it always better to be safe than sorry! Stickers - You can use any type of sticker to embed in resin pieces. You don't even have to use stickers, you can use paper or computer parts or little figurines. As long as they fit your mold and are suitable for resin i.e they aren't going to be watermarked. If you use something made of paper and don't seal it, it will be damaged and ruin your whole piece. So you need to make sure to seal paper before you embed it. I will upload a tutorial on this soon! Molds - You can use any silicone mold you can find. I found mine around various variety stores (in Australia examples would be Crazy Clarkes, Sam's Warehouse, Dollars and Sense, Choice etc.). Another mold you could use would be proper resin molds. These molds I believe are made out of polyethylene and they are specifically designed for resin. I am not sure if you can use any other molds for resin. An example of these specific resins molds are here: 🤍 but you should be able to find similar ones in your local craft store. Finishing your pieces - In order to finish your pieces you need to do something called doming. In order to dome your pieces, you first need to sand them so that you have a smooth surface to work with. Then doming is simply the process of pouring more resin on top of your piece to keep it shiny and even! It is really quite simple to do.
