For one year I grew and foraged 100% of my food. Every. Single. Bite. No grocery stores, no restaurants, not even a drink at a bar. Nature has been my garden, my pantry and my pharmacy. I lived in the city of Orlando, Florida in a 100 square foot tiny house. With no land of my own I turned front yards into gardens and shared the bounty of food with the homeowners. Over the year I grew over 100 different foods in my gardens, foraged over 200 foods from nature and I even grew and foraged my own medicine and vitamins too. This project wasn’t just about growing and foraging all of my food though. It was about empowering others to take back power from Big Ag. I built gardens 15 Gardens for the People, planted over 200 Community Fruit Trees, sent out over 5,000 seed packs to help people grow their own organic, healthy food and I taught free gardening classes to the people in my community. I’ve been exploring food for nearly a decade and I believe the globalized, industrialized food system is broken . This was a personal quest to see whether I could step away from Big Ag and grow and forage every bite of my own food. Here I am, one year later. I did it and I feel healthier and happier today than when I started. I'm here to share solutions for a more sustainable and just food system with you. Deborah and Gabe transformed an empty backyard lawn into an abundant permaculture micro-farm where they're growing fresh fruits and vegetables for themselves, and for sale at their farm gate stand. To grow food year-round in a northern climate, they also have a geodesic dome greenhouse with an indoor pond that helps regulate the temperature in all 4 seasons. You can follow and find out more about The Ecobubble here: 🤍 🤍 The couple is using permaculture and hügelkultur methods to grow food in their backyard gardens and they don't use any pesticides or herbicides. They've planted a food forest with fruit and nut trees, and they've also planted fruit trees and native plant species to feed birds and pollinators like bees and butterflies. The 26’ geodesic growing dome is from Arctic Acres in Canada: 🤍 These domes are available from Growing Spaces in the United States: 🤍 With a 1/2 acre of land, some infrastructure, and a whole lot of hard work, Deborah and Gabe are already growing loads of fresh food for themselves, their neighbours, and the wildlife around them. We can't wait to see what they get up to this year on their future homestead! You can follow along on their journey in bringing The Ecobubble vision to reality here: 🤍 🤍 Special thank you to Laurie from Right Arm Builds (Lauriebakker🤍rightarmbuilds.com) for being a growing dome ninja super star on filming day! BEHIND THE SCENES: 🤍 PRODUCTS & SERVICES: 🤍 AMAZON STOREFRONT: 🤍 BOKEH SUPPLEMENTS: 🤍 JOIN THE MULTITUDE: 🤍 FOLLOW US 🤍theparagraphic 🤍 LEARN MORE AT 🤍 What is a food forest? A food forest is an edible landscape that is modeled after a natural forest ecosystem. A food forest is an excellent way to produce a large quantity of food with minimal effort. Once established, a food forest will require little to no maintenance and will provide an abundance of fresh fruits, nuts, and vegetables throughout the growing season. A food forest can be created on any size piece of land, from a small urban backyard to a large rural property. The key to success is to design and plant the food forest in such a way that mimics the structure and function of a natural forest ecosystem.  The benefits of establishing a food forest are many. In addition to providing an abundance of fresh, healthy food, a well-designed food forest can help to improve soil quality, increase biodiversity, and provide habitat for wildlife. Where can you grow a food forest? A food forest can be grown in any backyard, regardless of size. The key to success is starting with a plan and design that takes into account the specific conditions of your yard. The first step is to perform a site analysis, which will help you understand the microclimates, sunlight, soil type and drainage in your yard. With this information, you can select the right plants for your food forest. Once you have a plan, the next step is to prepare the soil. This may involve adding amendments to improve drainage or adjusting the pH level. Then, it's time to start planting! When selecting plants for your food forest, consider both annual and perennial crops. Annuals will provide a quick harvest, while perennials will provide a longer-term food source. Be sure to include a mix of fruits, vegetables, nuts and herbs in your planting scheme. As your food forest grows, it's important to keep an eye on weeds and pests. Hand-pulling or using mulch can help control these problems naturally. With a little care and attention, your backyard food forest will thrive! Assuming you have the space, there's nothing more gratifying than growing your own food. And, while a traditional vegetable garden has its merits, why not go big and plan for a food forest? With a little bit of planning (and some hard work), you can create a backyard oasis that will provide you with an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables for years to come. Here are a few tips to get you started: 1. Choose the right location. Make sure you pick a spot that gets plenty of sunlight and has well-drained soil. 2. Select a variety of plants. When it comes to fruit and vegetables, the more the merrier! Plant everything from berries and grapes to tomatoes and potatoes. 3. Give them room to grow. Remember, most fruits and vegetables need room to spread out so don't plant them too close together. 4. Be patient! It takes time for a food forest to reach its full potential but it will be worth the wait! Growing your own fruit and nuts can save you money at the grocery store, and it’s a great way to get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air while you’re tending to your garden. Food forests can also provide habitat for wildlife, and can help to purify the air and water in urban areas. • • • • • • • • ABOUT PARAGRAPHIC: Handcrafted documentaries featuring artisans of all trades. Homesteading Couple Hasn’t Bought Groceries in a Year of Self-Sufficient Living

Chris and Stef jumped into self-sufficiency last year when they decided not to buy groceries for an entire year, including staples like salt, sugar, coffee, and flour! Instead, they've been growing, catching, raising, and harvesting 100% of their food supply on a small 1/2 acre homestead. They're only a few weeks away from completing their year-long homestead challenge and they attribute their success to hard work and to the fact that they live in the Southern Gulf Islands where they have a great growing climate and access to the ocean. Be sure to follow their🤍LovinofftheLand homesteading adventures – they're going to continue producing most of their own food even after the challenge is done, and may even announce a brand new challenge later this year! 🤍 🤍 🤍 The couple's four main sources of food have been: CATCH - they catch fish, prawns, and other seafood from the ocean GROW - they grow loads of vegetables, fruit, herbs, and spices on their land HARVEST - they forage for things like mushrooms, berries, nuts, and seaweed RAISE - they raise laying hens, chickens, and turkeys for eggs and meat Eating only what they produce has drastically reduced the amount of money that Chris and Stef spend on groceries (they still buy hygiene products and other items that are not food and beverages) but a lot of the savings went directly towards building infrastructures like fencing and the chicken coop. Another advantage of living off the land and sea like this is that they have noticed a huge reduction in the amount of household waste they're throwing out. Food from the garden doesn't come in a package! It was inspiring to meet these two and see all the work they've put into learning and working towards their goal of becoming more self-sufficient with their food production. They taught us a ton and we're looking forward to following along with them. Be sure to check out their YouTube channel which is called Lovin Off The Land: 🤍 Thanks for watching! Do you want to grow food for yourself or your family but think it isn't possible (or worth it) because you live in a small space, don't have land, or consider yourself a beginner gardener? The truth is, you CAN grow food and lots of it in a small space and in your spare time by starting with the right tools and considering container garden vegetables. If you want to maximize your growing space, your best option is to start growing vertically and being strategic about the types of crops you plant. If you want food fast, ditch the full size fruits and vegetables and opt for fast-growing organic hybrids which can take you from seed to harvest in 30, 35 or 60 days so that you can enjoy fresh food from your garden on the regular. In this video I share why I choose to garden in a GreenStalk vertical garden, the seeds that work best for small space gardeners and other products that enable me to have a successful garden. You can do this. We've done a lot of work in the garden this year – from Hügelkultur raised beds to dig vs. no-dig potatoes and a huge expansion to add space for growing corn, sweet potatoes, asparagus and a whole host of squash and pumpkin. Join us on a bright and sunny morning in the interior of central Portugal (growing zone 10a) for a look at what's growing well, what's growing less well and what's taking over the garden! 🤍 And thank you to one of our lovely club members, Ana, for providing the following translation of the conversation with our neighbour: Me: Good morning, how are you? Neighbour: We're getting there, what about you? Me: would you like more courgette's? Neighbour: Enough, there are only Two of us Me: More? Would you like more? Neighbour: No thank you, we're only two and we don't eat that much, but thank you anyway... Neighbour: [talking about the potato harvest] They are very small, last year they were big, this year they are tiny. But my friend, it's all there is round here, and that's the best we can get. That's it. Thank You! I guess they're not a fan of courgettes! 🤦‍♂️
