Nach Zusammenstößen im Kosovo: Serbien versetzt Armee in Alarmbereitschaft Serbien versetzt seine Truppen an der Grenze daraufhin in Alarmbereitschaft. Hintergrund sind Kommunalwahlen vom April, die von ethnischen Serben boykottiert wurden und bei denen Kosovo-Albaner gewählt wurden. Pristina (AP) — Nach Zusammenstößen zwischen ethnischen Serben und der Polizei im Kosovo hat Serbien seine Truppen an der Grenze zum Kosovo am Freitag in höchste Alarmbereitschaft versetzt. Bei den Zusammenstößen wurden insgesamt mehr als ein Dutzend Menschen auf beiden Seiten verletzt. Die Serben im Norden des Kosovos versuchten, neugewählten Vertretern von Stadtverwaltungen den Zugang zu Gebäuden zu blockieren. Die Polizei setzte Tränengas ein, mehrere Autos wurden in Brand gesteckt. Der serbische Präsident Aleksandar Vucic erklärte, er habe wegen der Zusammenstöße das serbische Militär in höchste Alarmbereitschaft versetzt. Zudem lasse er Soldaten an die Grenze zum Kosovo verlegen. Wegen «Gewalt» gegen Kosovo-Serben habe Serbien die im Kosovo stationierte Nato-Truppe aufgefordert, die Serben vor der kosovarischen Polizei zu schützen. Serbien erkennt die Unabhängigkeit seiner ehemaligen Provinz Kosovo nicht an. Die kosovarische Polizei teilte mit, sie habe ihre Präsenz im Norden des Landes ausgeweitet, um Bürgermeistern der Gemeinden Zvecan, Leposavic und Zubin Potok zu ermöglichen, ihre Ämter auszuüben. Nach Polizeiangaben wurden fünf Sicherheitskräfte von Blendgranaten und anderen Wurfobjekten verletzt. Ein Polizeiwagen sei ausgebrannt, drei weitere seien beschädigt worden. Kosovo-serbische Krankenhausmitarbeiter erklärten, etwa zehn Protestteilnehmer seien verletzt worden. Die Blockade hat mit Wahlen vom 23. April zu tun, die von ethnischen Serben weitgehend boykottiert wurden. Gewählt wurden nur ethnische Albaner und Angehörige anderer Minderheiten. Die Wahlen fanden in Gemeinden im Norden des Kosovos statt, in denen größtenteils ethnische Serben leben. Diese fordern Autonomie. Die albanische Webseite indexonline.net berichtete, kleine Gruppen ethnischer Serben hätten Bürgermeister daran gehindert, in Gebäude zu gelangen. Dabei hätten die ethnischen Serben ihre Hände hochgehalten, offenbar um zu signalisieren, dass es ihnen nicht um Gewalt gehe. Kosovo police and protesters clashed in the town of Zvecan, May 26 after a crowd gathered in front of the municipality building tried to prevent a newly-elected ethnic Albanian mayor from entering his office. Police fired tear gas to disperse protestors and a police car was set ablaze. Four people have been injured in the clashes, the Tanjug news agency reported. The protests follow widely-boycotted local elections. Some 50,000 Serbs living in four north Kosovo municipalities, including Zvecan, shunned the April 23 vote in protest that their demands for more autonomy had not been met - a new setback for a March peace deal between Kosovo and Serbia. Serbia has moved army units to its border with Kosovo, after clashes between Kosovan police and members of the country's ethnic Serb minority. The unrest began when Serbs tried to prevent newly elected ethnic Albanian officials from entering municipal buildings in the north. Serbs form the majority there - and boycotted last month's elections. That allowed Albanian candidates to win on a turnout of just over 3 percent. In 2008 Kosovo declared independence, which Serbia rejects. Predsjednik Srbije Aleksandar Vučić izdao je naredbu da se podigne borbena spremnost Vojske Srbije na najviši stepen, i hitan pokret u smjeru, kako je navedeno, administrativne linije sa Kosovom. Grupa građana sukobila se sa policijom ispred zgrade Opštine Zvečan, na sjeveru Kosova, nakon što su sigurnosne snage pokušale da pomognu novoizabranom gradonačelniku da uđe u zgradu. Kosovska policija je saopštila da pomaže gradonačelnicima Zvečana, Leposavića i Zubinog Potoka da uđu u zgrade opština. Ispred su se okupili građani srpske nacionalnosti koji su pokušali da im onemoguće ulazak. Gradonačelnici su juče položili zakletvu i preuzeli dužnost. Kosovo, Europe's newest country, was formed 10 years ago this week. It is peaceful today, but the path to its creation lay in one of Europe's most brutal sectarian conflicts. This small, landlocked state of two million people emerged as a result of one of Europe’s most brutal sectarian conflicts since the second world war. Today Kosovo is peaceful, but poor. Unemployment is high and the grey economy accounts for about 30% of the country’s economic activity. And Kosovans are the only citizens in Europe to not have visa free access to the rest of the continent. The country is still divided along ethnic lines. 90% of its people are Albanian speakers and mostly Muslim. About 10% are ethnic Serbs, who are Orthodox Christians and live mostly in the north. Why did such a small corner of the Balkans come to the world’s attention in 1999? The origins of modern Kosovo date back over a century. When the new state of Albania was formed in 1912, Kosovo was not included within its borders. Instead, Kosovars found themselves ruled by Serbia. As a Serbian province, Kosovo later became part of a new country: Yugoslavia. With the fall of communism across central and eastern Europe, Yugoslavia began to disintegrate in the early 1990s. As Croatia and Bosnia & Hercegovina declared independence local Serbs who wanted to remain in the same state as Serbia went to war. They were fully backed by Serbia and the Serbian-controlled Yugoslav armies. When those wars ended in 1995 Kosovo remained part of Serbia. Ethnic Albanians in Kosovo sensed that they too could gain their own independence. But Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic, wanting to keep what was left of Yugoslavia together, did not want to let Kosovo go. He’d made his intentions clear in a speech some years earlier. The Serbian army has said it's at its "highest level of combat readiness" following weeks of escalating tension between Serbia and Kosovo. Belgrade has accused Kosovo of plotting “terrorism against Serbs" in areas where some 50,000 ethnic Serbs live. In return, Pristina says Belgrade is behind "paramilitary formations" that set up roadblocks in majority Serb areas of north Kosovo on 10 December. In 2008, Kosovo declared independence from Serbia, however many countries, including Russia and China, do not recognise it. The European Union has been attempting to mediate, calling for "maximum restraint and immediate action".
The EU is trying once again to mediate between Serbian and Albanian Kosovars. But relations between the ethnic groups in Kosovo are marked by fear and mistrust. The situation remains tense.
