Tutorial regarding simple fiberglass mold making. We make a mold from a speedshape which is made of plastic. This process can be used with parts that are made of wood, metals. This process helps in easily replicating parts. In this video we explain how to make a mold for a part. Mold is made using ISO polyester resin and fiberglass chopped strand mat. Mold release wax is used alonmg with PVA mold release agent for excellent release. ISO polyester gelcoat is used to get a smooth and opaque top surface. In this video we explain how to add catalyst to polyester resin for fiberglass repair or building new parts. Polyester resins are commonly used with fiberglass and sometime mistakenly called fiberglass resin. The information in this video may also apply to vinylester resin systems. To clear up what could perhaps be a little confusing, historically the curing agent for the resin has been called catalyst and often still is, however in recent years there has been a push to call it an initiator as it does not behave as a true catalyst. In chemistry a true catalyst starts a reaction but is not consumed or changed in the reaction. In this case the curing agent is consumed and a more accurate description of it is as an initiator. Both terms are used in the video as the term catalyst is recognized as industry jargon. The term initiator would be more correct. Epoxy resins use a completely different chemistry and have different mixing requirements, our video on mixing epoxy is here: 🤍 Some general guide lines: For best results use measuring equipment, i.e. graduated mixing buckets for the resin and a pipette, graduated measuring cup (1oz with smaller graduations), or a catalyst dispenser for the initiator or catalyst. Catalyst rates can be changed to match the size batch, temperature, and part conditions that you are working with, however catalyzing too low or too high can have negative impacts on your resin curing. Due to a few issues with previous projects, and a fair amount of questions on this topic. I've decided to conduct a little experiment with polyester fiberglass resin on top of EPS(Expanded Polystyrene) foam. The issue is when the polyester resin is applied to the EPS foam, the foam tends to melt. While I am no chemical engineer, a little research has lead me to believe that styrene contained in the polyester resin acts as a solvent on foam. In this video, I'll be doing a simple demonstration with a piece of foam and a few ideas on how to combat the issue. While I understand that Epoxy resin would be a way to avoid the issue altogether, it is more expensive. My main goal is to discuss alternatives for people attempting projects on a budget. This will by no means be an end to the discussion, and I am very open to suggestions and feedback.
