Julian Assange has been detained at London's high-security Belmarsh Prison, one of the UK's toughest detention centers, since 2019. The WikiLeaks founder has long since completed his original 50-week sentence for skipping bail in 2012. But he has remained in custody ever since, in extremely harsh conditions, in what is essentially detention pending deportation. If the judges deny her husband the chance to launch another round of appeals, Assange's wife and lawyer, Stella, fears the worst. "Julian's life depends on him winning this," she said, in an interview with DW. A ruling from Britain's High Court paves the way for Julian Assange to be extradited to the United States, overturning a previous court decision declaring the WikiLeaks founder to be a suicide risk. Assange is facing 18 U.S. charges relating to the publishing of classified reports on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and diplomatic cables. In 2012, he sought refuge in London's Ecuadorian embassy after facing sex assault charges in Sweden. In 2019, after 7 years in the embassy, British police literally dragged Assange into custody. He now remains in a London prison. Global’s Redmond Shannon explains why Assange wouldn't face the strictest detention measures in the U.S. and what's next for him. Lawyer Stella Assange says her husband, Julian Assange’s health is “deteriorating by the minute”. For more than 1,500 days, Julian Assange has been waiting behind bars in London, under threat of extradition to the United States, where he faces espionage charges for leaking classified military documents. Julian Assange’s wife addressed the National Press Club on Monday, campaigning for the WikiLeaks Founder to be freed. “He’s stuck in a tiny concrete room … the United States want to put him on trial for publishing information,” Ms Assange told Sky News Australia. “The potential sentence is 175 years, so if Julian ever sets foot in the United States, there is a real risk he will die in prison sooner or later.”

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is a hero or criminal, depending on who you ask. We explain. As purveyor of secret U.S. government information, Julian Assange has few rivals. The release of a stunning trove of sensitive diplomatic cables and entire Pentagon databases nearly a decade ago made Assange and his anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks a household names and an enemy of the American government. Six years later, WikiLeaks published thousands of private emails involving members of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign that investigators said were stolen and passed to Assange's organization working for the Russian government. That episode and others so infuriated U.S. authorities that then-CIA Director Mike Pompeo called Assange's organization a "hostile intelligence service." But none of those things prompted the government to call Assange a criminal. #JulianAssange #WikiLeaks To read more: 🤍 When news breaks, we break it down for you.
