The soldiers were evacuated to a medical facility after the attack, according to a spokesman for the 1st Cavalry Division. An AP Television News cameraman saw intense fire from a heavy machine directed against two rebels who were running along a street and then dropped to the ground. One escaped but the other lay dead on the ground after the barrage. The fighting came after American warplanes and tanks attacked militants holed up in the neighbourhood overnight. A hospital director said 12 Iraqis were killed and 11 were wounded in the earlier strikes. The US military, which maintains casualties are often exaggerated by Iraqi hospital sources, said only one armed insurgent was killed. LIBERIA: FIGHTING CONTINUES AS INTERNATIONAL AID THREATENS TO LEAVE

21.07.2015

(10 May 1996) English/Nat As the international community threatens to pull out of Liberia - gunmen continue to roam the streets of the capital city, Monrovia. Liberian leaders are reaching crunch time to find peace as another ceasefire passes unheeded. At least one of the country's main warlords has pondered temporary asylum in Nigeria to bring peace to the region. The streets remain deserted save for the smatterings of Liberian gunmen. It's fighting like this that the international community is asking the gunmen to reconsider. If they stop - they'll get aid - in particular from the U-S which is offering a 100-million dollar package. The package would pay for equipment for African peacekeepers, the disarming and reintegration of rebels and the return of refugees. The money is contingent upon fulfilling the 1995 accord, which created the current government of rebel leaders and civilians and called for disarmament and elections this year. Nigeria and Ghana, which provide the bulk of troops for the 10-thousand-man peacekeeping force, have threatened to withdraw the army unless the current violence stops. Scenes like this on Wednesday have reportedly eased off. And people appear to want peace. SOUNDBITE: (English) (Q: Do you think it's time peace came to Monrovia?) "Yes! Yes! Everybody here wants peace. I even met a guy yesterday, we shook hands, hugged each other and told each other that we wanted peace." SUPERCAPTION: Lieutenant Charles Tubman, Government Police Officer Nigeria has offered asylum to faction leader Roosevelt Johnson. Johnson, who was ousted from Liberia's government in March, issued no immediate response to the offer. But his possible departure raises hopes of at least a temporary halt to nearly nonstop anarchy in Monrovia that has forced civilians to cower in makeshift refugee centres like this one. It was not immediately clear, however, if Johnson's exile would satisfy his two main rivals: Charles Taylor and Alhaji Kromah. The U-S embassy is still under heavy guard - with barbed wire wrapped round the compound where hundreds have sought refuge. The Egyptian embassy has been torched - and countless foreigners have fled the country. Nevertheless, Nigeria, as well as Ghana and the United States, have made clear that further military and economic support could end soon if the government doesn't stick to the 1995 peace accord. #Liberia #Fighting #violence Find out more about AP Archive: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 You can license this story through AP Archive: 🤍

Military personnel on tank 6. Wide of tank 7. Various of tanks on road 8. Tank in field STORYLINE: Israeli tanks were seen on the border with Lebanon on Saturday as the military remained on high alert. The Lebanon-Israel border has been witnessing sporadic acts of violence since last Saturday's surprise attack by Hamas on southern Israel. Earlier Hezbollah's TV station reported an intense exchange of fire along Lebanon's border with Israeli positions in a disputed area along the border with Syria's Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Al-Manar TV reported that Hezbollah fighters pounded Israeli positions in the Chebaa Farms and Kfar Chouba hills area on Saturday. It was the latest exchange of shelling between Israeli troops and Hezbollah fighters since last Saturday's surprise attack by Hamas. Israel’s military said that it was striking Lebanon after coming under fire from Hezbollah. Chebaa Farms was captured by Israel from Syria during the 1967 Mideast war, but Lebanon considers it and the nearby Kfar Chouba hills as Lebanese territories. The Golan Heights were annexed by Israel in 1981. = Clients are reminded to adhere to all listed restrictions and to check the terms of their licence agreements. Fierce gunbattles erupted when Israeli troops entered the city, to arrest militants, Palestinian security officials said. Israel said it arrested a top Islamic Jihad leader, Mohammed al Shubaki. Islamic Jihad, in a telephone call to The Associated Press, confirmed the arrest, and Palestinian officials said five militants in total were arrested in the raid. Palestinian Preventive Security said an undercover Israeli unit came into town in a car that was subsequently torched. One of the Palestinian killed was struck by a live bullet to the eye and many others were injured from rubber bullets in the gun battle, hospital officials said. The fighting took place in Ramallah's central Manara Square. The Israeli army said its forces forces were in the city for an attempted arrest when they were confronted with a very large riot, and shots fired toward the troops. Youths pelted Israeli army vehicles with stones - occasionally an Israeli soldier jumped out briefly to fire before rushing back into a jeep. Smoke was rising from buildings near the central square in town. Red-coloured smoke could be seen in the distance. The Israelis pulled out of the square under a hail of stones as dozens of Palestinians chased the departing jeeps. RWANDA: RWANDAN ARMY SEARCH FOR REBEL FORCES

21.07.2015

(8 Mar 1998) Rwandan/Nat The Rwandan army is searching for rebel forces in the forests, hills and swamps of the region, following a battle that killed 18 rebels earlier in the week. More than 150 people have been killed in central Rwanda in the last week, in the worst fighting in the region since the 1994 genocide. In an attempt to clamp down on recent violence, Rwandan army troops have attacked forces of the Interahamwe, the Hutu extremist militia. Eighteen rebels were killed on Thursday in a fierce battle with an undisclosed number of government troops. The officer leading the operation believes the Interahamwe forces will soon be defeated. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Well I think it's a matter of time, a very short time for sure. I don't think they're a credible group, but they enjoy the advantages of the terrain, and they still have the advantage of the local population, that they use as a shield in some places, mainly to confuse. It's a matter of time, it's quite a short time for a formidable conclusion." SUPER CAPTION: Lieutenant-Colonel Karenzi-Karake, Rwandan Army Despite being better equipped and trained than their opponents, Rwanda's army is still taking casualties. These men have been injured but will live, others have not been so lucky. The army claims to have lost eight men in the last week, but independent reports suggest the figure could be much higher. The latest fighting erupted on 28th of February. Conflict has intensified in Rwanda since hundreds of thousands of Hutus returned from exile in the Congo in November 1996. The rebels took part in the Hutu-led slaughter of more than 500-thousand Rwandan Tutsis and moderate Hutus in 1994. Tutsis gained control in July 1994 and stopped the massacres. This Tutsi woman survived those times, but lost everything. SOUNDBITE: (Kinyarwandan) "I went to hide in Kabgayi (a Catholic diocese), and then I went to Giko. When I came back here my house was destroyed, my property looted, I am still displaced here." SUPER CAPTION: Patricia Mukaluging, Survivor of 1994 Genocide Patricia's village of Bulinga was attacked by Interahamwe forces last week, when they killed several Tutsis. At least seven civilians have been killed over the last week, the number may be much higher. Many of the Hutus returning from exile have been accused of taking part in 1994's genocide. There are over 130-thousand in Cachots, or makeshift jails, like this one. Only a tiny number have been charged so far. These men were freed by the Interahamwe when they attacked Bulinga, but they chose to return rather than face life on the run. Altogether 138 rebels have been killed in the latest fighting. The army claims it is now mopping up the last remnants of the rebel forces, but it is inevitable that more casualties will be taken by both sides and the civilian population. Dead body under blanket 25. Wide shot street STORYLINE: New video of the street-to-street fighting in Fallujah was released late on Wednesday. The footage shows US Marines facing a resistance while advancing through the narrow streets of the one of the neighbourhoods of Fallujah. The insurgent fire is neutralised and they continue with their house to house clearing activity. Throughout the day, Americans hit the militants with artillery and mortars, and warplanes fired on the city's main street and market as well as the insurgent stronghold of Jolan, one of several neighbourhoods where troops were skirmishing with militants. At least 71 militants had been killed by early Wednesday, the third day of intense urban combat, the military said. As of Tuesday night, 10 US troops and two members of the Iraqi security forces had been killed. Marine reports on Wednesday said 25 American troops and 16 Iraqi soldiers were wounded. There was no new report Wednesday on US military deaths. Fallujah, 40 miles (64 kilometres) west of Baghdad, is the centrepiece of the Sunni Muslim insurgency that has stymied US efforts to secure Iraq and prepare for national elections that are scheduled for January. Most of Fallujah's 200,000 to 300,000 residents are believed to have fled the city before the US assault. Civilian casualties in the attack are not known, though US commanders say they believe the numbers are low. #Fallujah #USMarines Find out more about AP Archive: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 You can license this story through AP Archive: 🤍

Troops of the 9th Iraqi Army Division, 82nd Airborne and Armoured units of the 2nd Battalion 3rd Infantry Regiment are involved in the operation. A team from AP Television has been embedded with Alpha Company 2nd Battalion 3rd Infantry Regiment and filmed an operation on Wednesday. Soldiers can be seen going house to house looking for bomb-making facilities and arms caches and talking to local residents in an effort to stop insurgency. The operation was preparation ahead of ground troop deployment into the regional districts. Soldiers were filmed as they were deployed in the early hours of the morning, taking up positions around the districts of Shaab-ur and most recently Beida. Beida is across a main road adjacent to Sadr City. On Tuesday, an American military spokesman, Major General William Caldwell, told a news conference that US and Iraqi forces were focusing on areas of extremist activity in Baghdad and suggested talks were ongoing over when and how to move into Sadr City. Soldiers were filmed shooting at locks to gain entry to buildings and forcing entry to properties with a battering ram. AP Television's team, embedded with the troops, reported that the military spoke to local residents as part of their house to house searches in an attempt to gain intelligence to assist them in the future containment and security of this district. According to information from the US military involved in the searches in Baghdad, seven out of 10 homes have been found to contain weapons ranging from AK47 automatic assault rifles, SKS semi automatic rifles with bayonets and a variety of pistols. The troops, they said, unload these weapons and leave them within the household when they leave. Households in Iraq are legally allowed to hold a fully automatic assault weapon which can shoot at targets up to 450m away. Some said a shotgun would be a more acceptable measure for personal security in the home. Wide of man walking bike through debris and burnt out cars 18. Tracking shot of destroyed buildings STORYLINE: Ukrainian troops moved further north from the capital Kyiv on Saturday, taking up positions in the town of Bucha after retaking territory from Russian forces. Associated Press journalists counted six bodies of civilians scattered along a street and in the front yard of a house. The Ukrainian soldiers, backed by a column of tanks and armoured vehicles, attached cables to the bodies and pulled them off the street, fearing they may be booby-trapped with explosive devices. Residents of the town said the civilians were killed by Russian soldiers. "Those people were just walking and they shot them without any reason. Bang," said a Bucha resident who declined to give his name. As Russian forces pull back from Ukraine's capital region, retreating troops are creating a "catastrophic" situation for civilians by leaving mines around homes, abandoned equipment and "even the bodies of those killed," President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned Saturday. Ukraine and its Western allies reported mounting evidence of Russia withdrawing its forces from around Kyiv and building its troop strength in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian fighters reclaimed several areas near the capital after forcing the Russians out or moving in after them, officials said. = Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info🤍aparchive.com (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory. SOUTH AFRICA: CRONJE CRICKET INQUIRY (4)

21.07.2015

(15 Jun 2000) English/Nat Disgraced South African cricket captain Hansie Cronje confessed on Thursday to taking 1996 but again denied his team had ever thrown a match. Cronje, who announced his cricket career was over, told a commission of inquiry investigating corruption in the sport that stupidly he had been motivated by greed and lured by the temptation of easy money. In Cape Town on Thursday, the controversy that has enveloped South African cricket and the game as a whole, reached a new low with admissions by disgraced former captain Hansie Cronje that he lied to hide his involvement in match fixing and betting on the outcome of matches. SOUNDBITE: (English) "My initial denials of involvement made publicly and to the UCB were untruthful. My letter of the 11th of April was also untruthful in a number of respects and so too was the subsequent press statement issued on my instructions. I misled the United Cricket Board of South Africa and members of the South African government and those who tried to defend me. I also withheld facts from my legal representatives. I was not honest and I apologise unreservedly. I have also decided to sever my connections with the game and will not again play cricket at representative level. Words cannot begin to describe the shame, humiliation and pain which I feel in the knowledge that I have inflicted this on others. To my wife Berta, family and team mates in particular I apologise. The greatest honour which can be bestowed on any cricketer is to lead his country's national side. I failed in my moral and professional duties. Hopefully I can contribute some small measure of regress by placing before the commission the information which follows in this statement. Until now I have not named or implicated any other person and I feel that the revelations in this statement create serious implications for my personal safety. I have already received death threats. I wish to disclose all the information I have and in the emotional state in which I find myself, have dredged my memory as best as I can in order to place the facts before this commission. Since the first revelations made in the Indian press and in particular the morning of April the 11th of this year I have known that my days as a cricketer are over. There were however others, namely Herschelle Gibbs, Peter Stralion and Henry Williams, who have their playing careers before them and whose futures have been imperiled by my inexcusable actions." SUPER CAPTION: Hansie Cronje, former South African cricket captain Cronje, 30, said he first took a (U-S) 30-thousand dollar bribe in 1996 from a man introduced to him by former Indian skipper Muhammed Azharuddin. He took the money for correctly forecasting the outcome of a match. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Hamid and Sanjay indicated they wanted me to supply information but did not specify what exactly was required. I said I would not be prepared to do it unless we were assured of a place in the final in the triangular series. I was spinning them along as I think I never had any intention of throwing a match. They handed me cash in a cell phone box in case I changed my mind. I did not count the money which was left in a filing cabinet at home." SUPER CAPTION: Hansie Cronje, former South African cricket captain Previously Cronje had admitted to taking just (U-S) 8-thousand 200 dollars from a bookmaker in exchange for match information during a triangular series with England and Zimbabwe in South Africa. Gibbs reneged on the deal and Williams was injured. Both said they were not paid. SOUNDBITE: (English) Cronje was fired as captain. Various of people holding Ukrainian flags STORYLINE: A Ukrainian community group in Finland has brought a destroyed Russian tank to a Helsinki square to raise awareness of the ongoing war in Ukraine. The Ukrainian Association in Finland, which represents Ukrainians residing in the country, installed the tank near Helsinki's Parliament House. On Sunday dozens of Ukrainians gathered near the Russian T72B3 tank, and held a rally to draw attention to the war. "We decided to bring this tank as the material evidence of the brutality of this war, so everybody with their eyes can see it, and somehow that can activate their support for Ukraine," Nadiia Fedorova, a Ukrainian activist, said. With the onset of the war between Israel and Hamas, the world’s attention has swung away from the nearly 2-year-old conflict in Ukraine. Ukrainians fear that a combination of global fatigue, competing political agendas and limited resources will result in less aid for their military, hurting the country’s ability to sustain its confrontation with Russia. Saddam STORYLINE Saddam Hussein attended the latest session of his trial on Monday despite a defence boycott, shouting "Down with Bush" as he entered the courtroom. The former Iraqi leader looked haggard, wearing a blue robe rather than the suit he has worn previously. After Saddam entered on his own, his co-defendant Barzan Ibrahim was brought in by guards as he shouted and protested, briefly scuffling with guards. (CLIENTS NOTE, THE PICTURES OF BARZAN SCUFFLING WITH GUARDS WERE NOT PROVIDED ON THE LIVE FEED) Saddam complained to the court that he was being forced to attend. The eight defendants boycotted the past sessions, refusing to work with court-appointed defence attorneys named after their own defence team walked out in protest. Saddam shouted, "Down with the agents. Down with Bush. Long live the nation!" referring to the American president, as he entered the room. He wore a blue galabeya - a traditional Arab robe - and a black jacket, a stark contrast to the tailored black suits he has worn to past sessions. Saddam's wants the replacement of the trial's new chief judge, Raouf Abdel-Rahman, a Kurd, who took over last month after his predecessor stepped down amid criticism over his handling of the trial. The defence claims that Abdel-Rahman is unfit to try the case because he was sentenced to life in absentia in the 1970s for anti-state activity. Saddam became president in 1979, but was Iraq's most powerful man for several years before that. In his first session in charge on Jan. 29, Abdel-Rahman tried to restore the authority of the court which had witnessed numerous outbursts from Saddam and Ibrahim, Iraq's former intelligence chief. The judge ejected one defence lawyer, prompting the rest to leave in protest. Saddam and three co-defendants were also allowed to leave or forcibly removed, and the judge appointed replacement defence lawyers. In the following session Feb. 1, only three defendants attended; none showed up the next day. #Saddam #Hussein #Trial Find out more about AP Archive: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 You can license this story through AP Archive: 🤍

The company alleged the former President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos, stole a priceless golden Buddha statue in 1971. Marcos Junior dismissed the jury's decision as 'irrational.' Home at last but not happy. Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos is returning from a trip to Hawaii where he heard charges read out against his late father for yet another time. This time his family lost the battle. It all began in 1971 when Filipino treasure-hunter Rogelio Roxas charged Marcos' soldiers with confiscating a gold 3-foot-high (1 meter) Buddha statue he found in the northern Philippine mountains. Roxas said it was stuffed with diamonds. The locksmith cum treasure hunter claimed the soldiers later replaced the statue with a bronze one. Before his death in 1993, Roxas turned over his claim to the treasure to a group of investors that formed the Atlanta-based Golden Buddha Corporation. The corporation filed suit in Hawaii, originally seeking 1 trillion dollars. 'Bongbong' says he is not surprised with the jury's decision, as they are foreigners and are ignorant of what happened in the Philippines two decades ago. SOUNDBITE: (English) "As I said, I can only characterized the decision as are Americans deciding about supposed of the alleged activities of Filipinos that had happened in the Philippines 20 something odd years ago. How can they make a fair and just judgement when they don't know what really happened in our country." SUPER CAPTION: Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. He went on to say that he felt the decision was completely without foundation. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I have no statement except to react to the decision that was handed down by the court in Honolulu. I can only characterized it as being irrational because it is completely beyond reason. If the evidence presented I cannot understand the mental process that arrived at this decision." SUPER CAPTION: Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr. This hasn't been the first time the Marcos clan has lost in the courts. Three years ago, the Honolulu Federal Court also awarded $2 billion against the Marcos estate to some 10-thousand Filipinos who claimed they were victims of human rights violations during Marcos' regime. Like the Philippine government, they want to get the Marcos assets worth $ U-S 475 (m) million believed to be deposited in two Swiss banks. A revolt in the Philippines prompted the Marcos family to flee to Hawaii in 1986 where the former President died three years later. Various of flames rising from Taj Mahal hotel STORYLINE: Indian commandos were sending out a trickle of bodies and hostages from a luxury Mumbai hotel on Thursday morning as they attempted to free dozens of people still trapped or held captive, nearly a day after teams of gunmen stormed at least 10 sites in the heart of India's financial capital, killing 101 people and wounding more than 300. Among the dead were at least one Australian, Japanese and British national according to officials. Gunmen, heavily armed with assault rifles, hand grenades and explosives, had invaded two five star hotels, a popular restaurant, a crowded train station and a Jewish centre, in what appeared to be a highly coordinated assault late on Wednesday evening. A previously unknown Islamic militant group has claimed responsibility. Fighting between police and attackers continued on Thursday morning at some of the 10 landmarks more than 12 hours after the first attacks. Outside the Taj Hotel police and gunmen were exchanging occasional gunfire on Thursday morning. Authorities believed seven to 15 foreigners were hostages at the Taj Mahal hotel, according to a top state official but it was unclear where the hostages were in the Taj Mahal, which is divided into an older wing, which was in flames, and a modern tower that was not on fire. A series of explosions had rocked the luxury hotel just after midnight. Screams were heard and black smoke and flames billowed from the century-old edifice on Mumbai's waterfront. Firefighters sprayed water at the blaze and plucked people from balconies with extension ladders. By dawn, the fire was still burning. All had come from the Taj Mahal, the officials said. RWANDA: PRESIDENT BIZIMUNGU RESIGNS: FILE MATERIAL

(23 Mar 2000) Natural Sound President Pasteur Bizimungu of Rwanda has resigned. Bizimungu was appointed in 1994 by the Rwandan Patriotic Front when the former government was ousted. He recently accused Parliament and a newly sworn-in Cabinet of disobedience and failing to respect his choice for ministers. Rwandan President Pasteur Bizimungu resigned on Thursday, days after accusing Parliament and a newly sworn-in Cabinet of disobedience and said they were failing to respect his choice for ministers. (UPSOT) "From today, March 23, 2000, I resign from the post of President of the Republic of Rwanda," Bizimungu said in a letter to the President of the Supreme Court. Government officials told Associated Press that Bizimungu submitted his resignation in a letter to the President of the Supreme Court. Bizimungu was appointed by the Rwandan Patriotic Front (R-P-F) to serve as president in July 1994 when the former Hutu government, responsible for the 100-day slaughter of more than 500,000 minority Tutsis and politically moderate Hutus, was ousted. The R-P-F is a former rebel organisation and now a major political power which stopped the genocide. According to a 1993 power-sharing agreement, under which Rwanda is still governed, the then Hutu government allows the R-P-F to name the candidate for president. The National Assembly and the Cabinet must ratify its choice. Bizimungu, a Hutu, was embroiled in conflict with the Tutsi-led R-P-F over issues of corruption and the prosecution of some ministers suspected of graft and mismanagement. Former R-P-F rebel leader, Major General Paul Kagame, a Tutsi who is both vice president and Minister of Defence, is the real power in Rwanda. But Bizimungu's presidency was significant because of Rwanda's majority Hutu population. Government officials said National Assembly speaker, Vincent Biruta, would take over as interim president until the 18-member Cabinet and the 70-member Parliament decide on the next president. It is not yet clear when the decision will be made. Government officials said Bizimungu - a former businessman and a relative of Rwanda's late Hutu president, Juvenal Habyarimana - was opposed to the prosecution of ministers and officials suspected of corruption. The shooting down of Habyarimana's plane as it approached Kigali airport on April 6, 1994, on the way home from peace talks in Arusha, Tanzania, sparked 100 days of slaughter. Hundreds of thousands of Rwandans finally returned home from U-N refugee camps in Zaire in 1996. President Bizimungu was there to greet them. He promised that together they would rebuild their country and create a brighter future. Various of rebels outside hospital crying STORYLINE The Syrian army has recaptured the northern rebel stronghold of Idlib near the Turkish border, a major base that military defectors had held for months, a pro-government newspaper and an activist group said Tuesday. Prior to those reports, members of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) were seen fighting President Bashar Assad's forces on Sunday in an attempt to remain in control of Idlib. Exclusive Associated Press video of the siege shows FSA rebels shooting at Syrian forces. The odds are against the lightly armed rebel force being able to resist the highly equipped Syrian army. The Free Syrian Army is the largest armed opposition force, made up of army defectors and protesters who have taken up weapons. But its structure is very loose and the group is outgunned by regime forces. Most of the rebels are armed only with machine guns and rocket propelled grenades. As testament to that, rebels on Sunday hid improvised explosive devices under cardboard to target army tanks. At least seven rebels died in the operation to destroy the tank. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital while other rebels mourned the loss of friends and family members that perished in the fighting. The three-day operation to capture Idlib gives the regime some momentum as it tries to crush the armed resistance. Ghanoum. The operation by Assad's forces to capture Idlib was condemned by the majority in the international community.
