Find out all about the history and development of the Bandai WonderSwan in this video! It's a black and white console with a unique design which allows games to be played both horizontally, and vertically and was released in 1999, exclusive to Japan. The WonderSwan designed by Koto Laboratory, a company founded by Gunpei Yokoi, the designer of the Game & Watch, and co-creator of Game Boy at Nintendo, alongside Satoru Okada. Thanks to this collaboration with Gunpei Yokoi, some people like to think of the WonderSwan as the true successor to the Game Boy. There were two revisions of the console over its short lifetime, with the WonderSwan Color arriving in 2000, and a final model, the SwanCrystal, with a much improved LCD screen in 2002. This model here has an aftermarket front lit screen, but the original SwanCrystal wasn't lit at all. The three systems combined sold over 3.5 million units in Japan, and actually had a very impressive lineup of games from companies such as Squaresoft, Namco, Capcom and more! In a future episode, I'll cover some of the defining games for the system, but in this episode, we're' going to go back to Bandai's roots and discover the context around the development and release of the WonderSwan, beginning in 1950... #Retrodude #Retrogaming #Retroforever #Retroconsoles/handhelds The WonderSwan is a handheld game console released in Japan by Bandai. It was developed by Gunpei Yokoi's company Koto Laboratory and Bandai, and was the last piece of hardware Yokoi developed before his death in 1997. Released in 1999 in the fifth generation of video game consoles, the WonderSwan and its two later models, the WonderSwan Color and SwanCrystal were officially supported until being discontinued by Bandai in 2003. During its lifespan, no variation of the WonderSwan was released outside of Japan. Powered by a 16-bit central processing unit, the WonderSwan took advantage of a low price point and long battery life in comparison to its competition, Nintendo's Game Boy Color and SNK's Neo Geo Pocket Color. Later improvements took advantage of quality upgrades to the handheld's screen and added color. The WonderSwan is playable both vertically and horizontally, and features a unique library of games, including numerous first-party titles based on licensed anime properties, as well as significant third-party support from developers such as Squaresoft, Namco, Capcom and Banpresto. Overall, the WonderSwan in all its variations combined to sell an estimated 3.5 million units and managed to obtain as much as 8% of the Japanese handheld video game console market before being marginalized by Nintendo's Game Boy Advance. Retrospective feedback praises the potential of the WonderSwan despite its low sales and its brief time holding its own against Nintendo in the marketplace. What is Mega Man on the WonderSwan like? Is it a decent follow up to Mega Man and Bass for the SNES? And is it as good as the Gameboy games? Let's find out! Please subscribe if you enjoyed the video! - 🤍 Welcome to my review of Mega Man and Bass, or Rockman & Forte: Mirai Kara no Chousensha (Challenger from the future) for the Wonderswan! Link to the Rockman site with the concept art: 🤍 My new channel: 🤍 much like the gameboy games that came before it (show gameboy games) this entry wasn’t made by Capcom themselves, in the first year of the consoles release, Bandai were in need of more well known games to fill out the small library of their gameboy competitor and contacted Capcom to ask for permission to use Megaman in a brand new game. Capcom agreed and Bandai set out to make a new game in the much loved series. The game was actually made by a company called Layup who previously worked on some Gundam games. They were commissioned by Bandai to make a game especially for the Wonderswan system. Thanks to a fan translation patch, the game is now playable in english! So let’s stat with a brief overview of the story. A very convoluted story.. The game begins with Megaman is walking through Symphony City and he meets with a doppelgänger by the name of Rockman Shadow. Dr Wily also sent Bass to investigate what was going on in the city, Megaman and Bass decide to team up and rid the world of these new robots! Megaman super fans might recognise Rockman Shadow as Quint from Megaman 2 on the gameboy, *show image from MMII* However, he isn’t quint, but actually a failed prototype version of Quint, which was left aside by Wily in the future, and gained consciousness to rebuild it’s self and create a set of evil robots in the future called the Dimensions, which he sent back in time to try and destroy the world! Yes, the is one of the only games in the main series in which Dr Wily didn’t make the bosses! And also one of the most convoluted plots too! Just like the SNES game before it, you begin with the choice of playing the game as either Megaman or Bass. Megaman controls the same as he has done ever since Megaman 4, complete with all his abilities including the charge shot and dash. Bass is the easier of the two characters to play as thanks to his ability to fire in seven directions, dash and double jump. I decided to play through the game as Megaman though to enjoy the classic gameplay experience. I do like playing as Bass though, it makes it feel more like an X game than classic mega man. The game begins much like the later Megaman games with an intro stage, before opening up into a level map with 5 different robot master to choose from. Only last year, the concept are for the bosses was found by the games designer and uploaded onto the site Rockman Corner. I’ll put a link to the site in the description because it’s really cool that they have been found after so long! He also found the original source code, but had no way of accessing it.. maybe one day someone will be able to get the code off that CD and make it available online. It would be amazing to see how a wonder swan game was developed! In terms of gameplay, The game it’s self feels very similar to the gameboy release, but with a few strange design choices. Most noticeable the fact that the enemies and bosses don’t have any frames which basically means the faster you can press the fire button, there damage you will do, making their weapon weaknesses practically useless. Which is a shame because the game has some interesting weapons to use! I wasn’t expecting to enjoy the game, I’ve read and watched several reviews of it over the years and they made it sound like a bad imitation, However, I was very surprised at the quality of this game! For me it’s almost up there with some of the gameboy games, and it was great to play a traditional Megaman that I’d never experienced before! It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan! Just don’t expect anything super amazing and you’ll be sure to have a good time with it! A look at an increasingly obscure hand held from Bandai
Should you buy a Wonderswan in 2018? The Bandai Wonderswan was originally released in 1999 and was followed by two upgraded revisions: the Wonderswan Color and SwanCrystal. Featuring IPs such as Mega Man (both Mega Man Battle Network and Mega Man and Bass games), Digimon, Klanoa, and more, it's hard to believe that this system never made it out of Japan. Thus, today we're deciding if Bandai's little console is worth tracking down in this Wonderswan buying guide! There have been some pretty obscure Mega Man games over the years, ranging from DOS games to anime choose-your-own-adventure things, but perhaps one of the oddest is Mega Man and Bass: Challenger From the Future, released for the Bandai Wonderswan in 1999. Thus, today on Stuff We Play, we're doing a deep dive into The Obscure MegaMan Wonderswan Game best known as Mega Man and Bass 2! This video was sponsored by ZenPlus. Game Boy).
