So what the heck is this thing called Arduino? Well, Arduino is a tool that helps you control electronic stuff with code. So if you're building a house, you'd probably go grab a hammer. Well, if you're gonna build a project using electronic stuff, grab yourself an Arduino. But what do I mean exactly by electronic stuff? Well, let's make two big general groups. Inputs and outputs. Inputs are devices that gather information, and outputs are devices that have some action in the world. So for inputs, think of things, like temperature sensors, light sensors, touch sensors, flex sensors, humidity sensors, infrared sensor, distance sensors. Just to name a few. Then you have things like outputs. DC motors, stepper motors, servo motors, LEDs, LED strips, buzzers, speakers, LCD displays, OLED displays. The list goes on. What Arduino can do is stand in the middle of these input and output devices and control them with some cool logic that you get to create. So Arduino can be used to read inputs and control outputs. Okay. So now you have a general idea of what Arduino is. It's a tool to control electronic stuff. Great! Okay. But how do you actually get started using Arduino? What do you have to do? So here's what you're gonna need. We're gonna talk about the big three. It's what I like to call the Arduino trifecta. You've got Arduino hardware, the Arduino IDE, and the actual Arduino code that you're gonna need to write. So first, we have the physical component of Arduino, which is called an Arduino board. There's a bunch of different types of Arduino boards out there. When someone says Arduino board, it could mean a number of these different circuit boards. In just a little bit, I'm gonna tell you exactly which one to go by if you haven't purchased one yet. And here's some quick good news. If you have bought one already, it's probably gonna work just fine. Now, all Arduino boards share one thing in common. They have a microcontroller on them. A microcontroller is basically a really small computer. So when you use an Arduino, you're really just using a microcontroller. The microcontroller is what enables us to read those different inputs and control those outputs. So again, when somebody says Arduino board, they're talking about something physical... Go from blinking an LED to virtual prototyping in seven hours and still have time to eat lunch! This class is for anyone who has never played around with Arduino before and those who have played around a little bit but aren't entirely sure what it's all about. It's easier than you think! We'll put together basic single component electrical circuits that will teach you about analog and digital, input and output, and basic programming concepts such as "if" statements. We'll also practice basic serial communication, and briefly cover basic virtual prototyping using Fritzing (🤍fritzing.org). In case you haven't noticed, the key word here is basic. Pretty fancy sounding, and should make you feel smart anytime you use it. The IDE is a text editor like program that allows you to write computer code for your Arduino board. When you open up the Arduino program, you are opening the IDE. It is intentionally stream lined to keep things as simple and straightforward as possible. When you save a file in Arduino, the file is called a sketch - a sketch is where you save all the computer code that you have written. Lets take a look at some of the buttons on the IDE. The button that looks like a checkmark is called "verify". When you press this, your code will be compiled and any errors will be displayed in the window at the bottom. The short cut key for verify is Control + R. The button in the shape of an arrow pointing right is the upload button. When you press this, the sketch will be uploaded to your Arduino board. The short cut key for upload is Control + U. The button on the far right side of the screen is the serial monitor button. When you use the serial monitor functions, you can send and receive information from your Arduino board while it is running. We will talk much more about serial monitor later, but I just wanted to point it out now. The shortcut key for serial monitor is Shift + Control + M. *Try On Your Own: This course is based around the example sketches provided with the Arduino IDE. Open up your Arduino IDE and go to File - Example - 01.Basics and open up three different sketches. In this tutorial series, Shawn introduces the concept of Tiny Machine Learning (TinyML), which consists of running machine learning algorithms on microcontrollers. For the first part, we use TensorFlow and Google Colab to train a simple neural network model that predicts the output of the sine function. While this is an inefficient method of creating a sinewave, it allows us to play with small, functioning, and non-linear neural networks. The example training steps shown in this video are accomplished with Google Colab (🤍 This web-based Python editing software allows us to play with TensorFlow without needing to install various packages on our local machine. Once we have a functioning model, we convert itto a TensorFlow Lite (tflite) model file. We then write a quick script that reads the bytes from the tflite file and creates a C header file for us to load into our embedded program on the next episode. Finally, we can download both the .tflite and .h header file to our computer for deployment to the Arduino, which we will cover in the next episode.
