Brief look at GMRS as an option for communication. As a few have pointed out, this particular radio is a UV-5R (Ham) radio with GMRS channels programmed in. This is for listening only - a scanner - (as it comes out of the box, it will not transmit on inappropriate bands). The UV-5G is what I typically use (physically the same radio).
