Russian President Vladimir Putin led mourners at the moving funeral of the 'Soviet Sinatra' Iosif Kobzon. The crooner, who was a perennial fixture on Soviet and Russian radio in the early 1960s, died aged 80 after a protracted battle with cancer. President Putin sat with Mr Kobzon's widow Nelli Kobzon, who covered her hair in a black shawl and as the ceremony progressed held hands with the first female cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova. Mr Putin was also seen laying a bunch of roses on at the bottom of the casket that was emblazoned with the Russian flag. Mourners were able to see Mr Kobzon for one last time and say goodbye as the top of the casket was left open for part of the funeral held at the Tchaikovsky concert hall in Moscow, Russia. Kobzon's striking baritone and repertoire of songs about the heroic achievements of the Soviet people helped make him one of Russia's most popular singers of the 20th century. Иосиф Кобзон - Доченька (сл. и муз. Ирины Грибулиной) Father and Daughter Wedding dance My girl is leaving for another He is not my rival, but still... My girl is leaving home Looking like a lady. The dolls I gave her No longer have a master And the words I said to her Ring like a guitar tune. Chorus: I love you, my daughter, I pray for you, my daughter, I fear for you, my daughter, How are you doing there without me? Be happy then, my daughter Be successful, my daughter To your love, my daughter I empty this cup. I used to come home late As you slept in your little bed And my tiredness dissipated As soon as I saw you. As you grew out of your little dresses, You became a stubborn teenager, But still I would melt like spring ice When you kissed me. Chorus Everything repeats itself in life Nothing changes as years go by. Our children leave us, Like we once left our parents. Let them never see any grief Let them keep their dreams safe in their hearts Let them never offend one another Let them keep their love and loyalty.

When Sophie Tucker began singing this song written by Yellen & Pollack in 1925, the Jewish experience in America had included many mothers dealing with privations to care for their families, all the while passing down values that their tradition holds dear. Whether or not you have a “Yiddishe Momme” of your own, lose yourself in this Prohibition-era story, a tribute to mothers who went through great hardship for the sake of their little ones. On a personal note, when I sing this song I think of the special bond I had with my grandmother, which was very strong right up to her passing just two years ago. She would always say two things to me – first, she would say, “Azi, you’ll never be a great cantor unless you gain some weight!”. And on hearing this song, she would add “Azi, when you sing in Yiddish, you sound like a Goy!” As to being a Cantor, I am doing alright, and as to my Yiddish accent, what do you think? The Soviet Sinatra THE VOICE BEHIND THE IRON CURTAIN, A PIGEON, THE CHOREOGRAPHER, AND FROM PSYCHEDELIC TO SOUTHERN ROCK Joseph Kobzon was the popular Soviet singer, whose career mirrored that in many ways of Frank Sinatra. His distinctive voice, his popularity with audiences, his charitable activities, and his reported underworld associations all were reminiscent of Sinatra, albeit he was a communist. Carole Shelley is best known as Gwendolyn Pigeon, one of the Pigeon sisters introduced by Neil Simon in his play The Odd Couple. She played the role on the stage, in the film, and on television. She was also an accomplished Broadway actress and won a Tony in 1979 for The Elephant Man. Paul Taylor was a dancer and choreographer, generally acknowledged as the top choreographer of this generation. Ed King was a guitarist and songwriter, who contributed to a #1 hit in 1967, “Incense and Peppermints”. He then went on to play with Lynyrd Skynyrd, and co-wrote the 1974 Southern classic, “Sweet Home Alabama.” Iosif (Joseph) Davydovich Kobzon (Russian: Ио́сиф Давы́дович Кобзо́н; 11 September 1937 — 30 August 2018)[2] was a Soviet and Russian singer[3] of Jewish descent, known for his crooner style. 7-year old Iosif with his father's medals, 1944 Kobzon was born to Jewish parents in the mining town of Chasiv Yar, in the Donbass region of Ukraine. As a boy he demonstrated a talent for singing, winning numerous regional singing contests. He reached the national finals on two separate occasions, appearing in concerts dedicated to Joseph Stalin - a significant honour at the time. Despite his talent for singing, Kobzon went on to technical school to study geology and mining in Dnipropetrovsk,[4] as this was considered a lucrative vocation in the Soviet Union following the Second World War.[5] However, in 1959, following his 1956-1959 contact with professional music instructors in the Soviet Army where he was a member of the army's song and dance ensemble, he decided that music would be his preferred vocation.[4] In 1958, Kobzon started his singing career in Moscow, and enrolled to study at the Gnessin Institute.[4] In the next few years he made valuable contacts in Moscow's entertainment world, and was eventually given a chance by composer Arkady Ostrovsky to perform some of his music.[7] Initially, he performed in a duet with the tenor Shelley was born in London, England, the daughter of Deborah (née Bloomstein), an opera singer of Russian Jewish descent, and Curtis Shelley, a composer of German Jewish origin.[4][5][6] Her father had migrated to London before World War II.[1] Shelley made her Broadway debut as Gwendolyn Pigeon in the original 1965 production of The Odd Couple (starring Art Carney and Walter Matthau).[4][7] She reprised the role for the 1968 film version (with Jack Lemmon replacing Carney),[8] and for (the first part of) the first season of the subsequent television series (starring Tony Randall and Jack Klugman).[9] She and Monica Evans, her co-star as her sister Cecily Pigeon, were the only two performers to be in all three of The Odd Couple versions: stage, then film, then the first television adaptation—and in the same roles. Paul Belville Taylor, Jr. (July 29, 1930 – August 29, 2018) was an American dancer and choreographer. He was among the last living members of the third generation of America's modern dance artists. Taylor was born in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, to Paul Belville Taylor, Sr., a physicist,[2] and to the former Elizabeth Rust Pendleton.[3] He grew up in and around Washington, DC. By his teens, he had grown to more than six feet in height. He was a swimmer and student of painting at Syracuse University in the late 1940s. Upon discovering dance through books at the school library, he transferred to Juilliard,[4] where he earned a B.S. degree in dance in 1953[5] under director Martha Hill. Edward Calhoun King[1] (September 14, 1949 – August 22, 2018)[2] was an American musician. He was a guitarist for the psychedelic rock band Strawberry Alarm Clock and guitarist and bassist for the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd from 1972 to 1975 and again from 1987 to 1996. King met the members of what was to become the Jacksonville, Florida-based Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd when an earlier lineup of some of its members opened for Strawberry Alarm Clock on a few shows in early 1968. It wasn't until 1972 that he joined Skynyrd,[7] replacing Leon Wilkeson on bass, who had left the band briefly. Wilkeson rejoined the band, and King switched to lead guitar, creating with Allen Collins and Gary Rossington the triple-guitar attack that became a signature sound for the band.

(30 Aug 2018) IOSIF KOBZON, SINGER DUBBED 'SOVIET SINATRA,' DIES AT AGE 80    Iosif Kobzon, an iconic Russian crooner and political figure dubbed "the Soviet Sinatra" for his decades-long career, has died.  He was 80 years old.    One of the most revered Russian singers of the 20th century, Kobzon is remembered not only for his concerts but also for efforts to negotiate the release of hostages and prisoners of war.    The Russian State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, said in a statement that Kobzon died Thursday (30 AUG. 2018).    Russian news agencies quoted his assistant as saying the singer's death resulted from a protracted illness, a typical Russian euphemism for cancer.  Kobzon was diagnosed with cancer a decade ago.    President Vladimir Putin on Thursday sent his condolences to Kobzon's family, calling him "truly a people's artist" and a "man of great strength, courage and dignity."  Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Kobzon was "a wise mentor who was always there with help and advice."    With his trademark toupee, boxer's build and striking baritone that could easily withstand even seven-hour singing marathons, Kobzon was a perennial fixture on Soviet and Russian radio and television starting in the early 1960s.    His devotion to the Communist party and a repertoire of patriotic songs about the heroic achievements of the Soviet people helped him become one of the most successful performers of the Soviet era.  He sold tens of millions of records in the Soviet Union and the Socialist Bloc countries.    But to generations of Soviet dissidents and rock music fans, Kobzon symbolized the omnipresent Communist propaganda that contradicted the idea of artistic expression free from censorship and government control.    Kobzon was born into a poor Jewish family in the eastern Ukrainian town of Chasov Yar in 1937 - in the darkest hour of purges instigated by Soviet leader Josef Stalin.    As part of a children's choir, Kobzon performed in front of Stalin and later graduated from the prestigious Gnesin music school in Moscow.  He rose to fame in the early 1960s with "Cuba My Love," a song praising the anti-U.S. struggle of Cuban Communists.    By 1973, Kobzon had become a member of the Communist Party and earned a degree at the University of Marxism-Leninism.    He recorded albums with songs about World War II written by leading Soviet songwriters, sang opera arias as well as Russian and Ashkenazi Jewish folk songs and rediscovered dozens of popular songs dating back to the 1920s.    His hours-long shows with brass and string orchestras drew crowds throughout the Soviet Union, and his patriotic songs boosted his popularity among the country's military and law enforcement agencies.    In 1989, Kobzon was elected to the first Soviet parliament. In the same year, as an influential member of the Soviet Jewish community, he participated in the talks that restored Soviet-Israeli diplomatic ties, which had been cut after the 1967 Mideast War.    He tried to organize a Russian tour for his longtime idol Frank Sinatra.  But to Sinatra's demand to be sent a handwritten invitation from Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and to hold his show on Moscow's Red Square, Kobzon replied with a four-letter swear word.       In 2003, a Swiss court froze Kobzon's assets in a Swiss bank and confiscated some $750,000 of his money alleging it was laundered by a criminal group.    Kobzon fiercely denied the claims and said they were made up by his political opponents.                         The crooner will be laid to rest in Moscow on Sunday.
