The grille and the front intakes, the trim down the middle of the hood and across its broad rump, the frame around the greenhouse, the exhaust pipes, and the wheels all sparkle as brightly as a diamond-encrusted Rolex in a Miami nightclub. Subtle it ain't. But, as Mercedes-Benz has learned, when it comes to Maybach, all that glitters is gold. It didn't start that way. Panicked by Volkswagen's purchase of Bentley and BMW's audacious acquisition of Rolls-Royce in the 1990s, Mercedes-Benz decided that it, too, needed an über-luxury limousine. The car it built on the W140 S-Class platform and launched to much fanfare in 2003 was as technically competent and lavishly finished as its rivals, but management decided the Mercedes-Benz name didn't have the gravitas needed to compete with the gilded British brands. Instead of being badged Mercedes-Benz Maybach, it became, simply, Maybach. Wilhelm Maybach was an engineer who worked with Gottlieb Daimler at the dawn of the automotive age and built his own luxury cars in the years leading up to World War II. It was a revered name among some prewar car buffs, but it meant nothing to anyone else. Before Maybach was quietly taken off life support in 2013, barely 3,000 examples had been sold worldwide. One well-placed industry source suggests Mercedes lost more than $350,000 on every car it built. In 2015, the company did what it should have done in the first place: It overtly linked the Maybach name with the three-pointed star. The largest and most lavishly equipped versions of the W222 S-Class were badged Mercedes-Maybach, the three-pointed star standing proud on the hood, and although the decision was made so late in the car's development there was no time to design and engineer any unique parts, it proved a runaway success. Mercedes has since sold more than 60,000 of these blinged-up S-Class models, many in China, where in 2019 demand was running at 700 cars a month. Now That You're Up to Speed… The new Mercedes-Maybach is based on the redesigned W223 S-Class launched late last year. Unlike the outgoing car, though, it does have unique sheetmetal, including a new hood that sits three-quarters of an inch higher than the S-Class hood and runs back from a large, more upright grille with bright vertical bars. It also features a redesigned greenhouse that includes a slightly higher roofline, fixed rear quarter windows, and a more formal C-pillar. And more chrome. Because that's what the customers like. The new Mercedes-Maybach rolls on the longest of the three platforms developed for the new S-Class. Codenamed Z223, it boasts 7 inches more between the axles than the long-wheelbase platform (codenamed V223) that underpins all S-Class models sold in the U.S., and 11.5 inches more than the standard-wheelbase S-Class that's common in Europe. All that extra length is dedicated to the rear passenger compartment, not the least because that's where many of the cars' owners in its three largest markets—China, Russia, and South Korea—spend most of their time, their chauffeurs handling the driving chores. The rear seats can be reclined from a 19-degree rake to 43 degrees, while the leg rests extend 2 inches further than before and will give you a calf massage should you so desire. Neck and shoulder heating is standard, and the seat belts are presented to you like those in the front seats of Mercedes coupes so you don't have to twist and find them. The standard infotainment screens on the backs of the front seats can be controlled via a smaller, removable touchscreen device mounted in the rear center console so you don't have to stretch forward, either. Among the few options to be offered to American buyers is a package that adds heated and cooled cupholders to the rear-seat center console, along with tables that fold out from it like those in a first-class airline seat. Other options include a fridge—complete with a pair of metal champagne flutes—that's accessed via a panel between the seats, and an electric opening and closing system for the rear doors actuated by switches mounted in the roof, just above the rear windows. Standard features are of course plentiful and include luxury items such as soft-close doors, an air suspension, a 30-speaker Burmester stereo system, and a rear-seat entertainment system with two 11.6-inch touchscreens and much, much more. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Under the hood of every S580 sedan is a 496-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine, which is augmented by a 48-volt hybrid system. Going with the S680 swaps in a 621-hp 6.0-liter V-12. All models will come with Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel drive system. The V-8 makes 33 more horsepower than the old S560 from 2020, and it packs quite a punch. During our testing, the S580 rocketed to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. But that's not really the most impressive thing about the Maybach S-class. During our time with the car, we were impressed with the ride quality and the nearly silent cabin—we recorded an extremely low 64 decibels inside the car while cruising at 70 mph. The V-12's power rating is the same as the 2020 S650 model and does not benefit from a 48-volt hybrid system, but we haven't had a chance to test the new one yet. An air suspension and an active sound cancellation system are both standard in the new model, which helps the car deliver a silky, ultra-quiet ride; the S-class also offers rear-wheel steering which should help with navigating this big sedan through tight city streets. Das beste oder nichts. Nou, zoek niet verder, de rijtest van de Mercedes-Maybach S-klasse is hier. Nadat we in de Maybach GLS in nogal opzichtige kleurencombinatie reden, gaan we ervanuit dat het (sub)merk weer bij iedereen op het netvlies staat. Maybach is namelijk het merk van de comebacks, de eerste keer ging dat niet helemaal zoals Mercedes het gepland had. Na een afwezigheid van ruim 60 jaar lanceerde Maybach in 2002 de 57 en de 62. Gezien de afmetingen zou je verwachten dat op de lengte van de verschillende modellen sloeg, maar het bleek de voorspelling van de verkoopcijfers. Later volgde nog de Maybach 57S, richtig scheisse waren ook de verkoopcijfers van die variant. Niet zo gek dat Mercedes de stekker uit het avontuur trok nadat slechts 3000 Maybachs waren gebouwd. In 2015 kwam Maybach echter terug: ditmaal als submerk van Mercedes. Voortaan viel er wat te kiezen als je een echt dikke S-klasse wilde: een AMG met de illusie van sportiviteit of Maybach voor extra luxe. Het lijkt een potato-potató discussie, maar het werkte als een speer. Totaal verkocht Mercedes-Maybach 60.000 stuks van de S-klasse. Van een succesnummer plegen de Duitse autofabrikanten simpelweg een opvolger te introduceren, het zijn immers geen Italianen. Ook deze keer wordt de basis gevormd door de (nog redelijk) nieuwe S-klasse. Al sinds jaar en dag is de S-klasse in verschillende lengtes te krijgen, waarbij vreemd genoeg de normale, korte versie amper geleverd lijkt te worden. De S-klasse lang krijgt 11 centimeters meer tussen de wielen, de Maybach S-klasse voegt daar nog weer 18 cm aan toe. De totale lengte van de Mercedes-Maybach S-klasse uit de test: bijna 5,5 meter. Geen handige auto om te parkeren op de doorsnee oprit dus en zelfs bij mij was het even passen en meten :). De totale lengte van dit slagschip komt uit op 5,48 meter en de wielbasis bedraagt 3,40 meter. Gelukkig kan de Maybach S-klasse worden uitgerust met vierwielbesturing. De testauto had het en het scheelt serieus veel tijdens manoeuvreren. De vierwielbesturing is er overigens in twee smaken (die allebei even duur zijn): bij de grotere velgmaten (21 inch) is de stuuruitslag beperkt tot 4,5 graad en wordt de draaicirkel één meter korter. Kies je voor wat bescheidenere putdeksels, dan wordt de draaicirkel twee meter kleiner omdat de achterwielen tot 10 graden kunnen uitslaan. Vanzelfsprekend komt de extra lengte volledig ten goede aan de achterpassagiers. Dat die al niet karig zaten in een reguliere S-klasse liet ik al eens in een video zien. Het kon dus nóg gekker. Achterin zit je meer dan subliem. Zeker rechtsachterin kan de stoel in een bijzonder geriefelijke ligstand worden gezet. Mocht het buiten wat fris zijn, weet dan dat niet alleen de stoel en armleuningen verwarmd zijn, maar er inmiddels ook nek- en schouderverwarming aan boord is. Mocht je een lange dag hebben gehad en voor de troepen hebben gestaan. Geen nood: er is een massagefunctie, die inmiddels ook in de beensteun is verwerkt. Je chauffeur kan je dus naar huis rijden terwijl je kuiten een ontspannen behandeling krijgen. Concurrenten Bentley en Rolls-Royce zijn nog exclusiever, nog prijziger en kunnen met nog meer exotische materialen in het interieur worden afgewerkt. Maar verder doen de Britten het niet beter dan Mercedes-Maybach. De S-klasse is (voor nu) trendsetter qua technologie, daar kan geen dikker tapijtje tegenop. I drove my first car until it broke down when I was 20. Then in 2008 Impala that I delivered pizza in...then I got a hit and run on me and it was totaled......then thats how I got the Monte Carlo! Then in 2016 we moved to LA, we saved up and bought the Honda Civic. That car got us through the first 5 years living here and it worked out perfect. In 2020 I finally did it...I got the Mercedes!! The 2020 C63 AMG.....that car still is so dope!!! I LOVED IT!! Then 2021 we got my mom her AMG & Rosie her AMG GLE...truly the highlights of my life being able to get them their dream cars. THANK YOU ALL FOR MAKING THAT POSSIBLE!!!!!!! Now in 2023 its finally happened...I got the ultimate Mercedes.....the 2023 V12 S680 Maybach.....straight ridiculous!!! I still cant believe its in my garage....doesnt seem real. I feel like Im gunna wake up and Im late for work at the pizza spot....like this has all been a dream. If you grew up poor you may relate to this...when you were a kid and you KNEW you were the poor kid...what did you think or wish about? I wished I didnt have to worry, thats it. Every time we grocery shopped I would add up the bill in my head and secretly try to put stuff back so my mom wouldnt be embarrassed when the total was too much. When I wanted something I just acted like I hated that stuff so she wouldnt feel bad about it....my whole life Ive been pretending when it came to this stuff. So to see this thumbnail and know I did it without stepping on anyone....Im finally proud of it. I didnt do it selling packs ...I did it by being me....which is the coolest thing I could ever hope for...thank you all so much!!! My first car ever was a Dodge Intrepid I illegally bought at 14 in Portland Oregon with my little brother. No license, no insurance ....just a stack n my pocket and the lies I told. I told them I forgot my license, they let me use a picture of my stepmoms license, shady car dealer 100% .....ahahahaaahahahahahahahaha. Fast forward nearly 20 years later & I have my dream car. It took 10 years of non stop working 18 hour days, running 6 businesses all while not getting paid for my YouTube views.....but it finally happened. So...shoutout to Mercedes for letting me get the 1st 2023 V12 Maybach on American soil....truly doesnt even sound real ahahahhaahah!!! My entire family are truck drivers or diesel mechanics...so growing up being forced to work on cars made me HATE it. So growing up I loved cars....but hated workin on em so I never really studied em. I dont know the terms, I cant change my spark plugs....but Ive been driving since I was 5....cars have always been apart of my life. Now that Im older Ive grown to appreciate them 100x more....so here it is guys...the FULL review on the new car....thank you for supporting!
