With the district administration in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya ordering the closure of all shops in the state capital Shillong by 10 pm to prevent untoward incidents, EastMojo reached out to tourists in the capital to learn what they think of the controversial decision. As business owners will be hit hardest by the new rule, EastMojo also reached out to a few businessmen for their take on the administration's controversial decision. Devendra Singhania, the head of police bazar, the commercial hub of the Meghalaya capital, also shared his opinion on the administration's latest move. Amid the raging debate, Meghalaya's Tourism Minister George Lyngdoh opined that if all the shops are shut down at 10 pm, it might give more freedom to anti-social elements to cause trouble. The order came following an attack on a police station in Meghalaya capital Shillong recently. In an order, Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah said, “Preventive measures need to be taken to ensure the safety and security of the public and to maintain peace and tranquility within the city. East Shillong Constituency MLA took stock of the situation early Friday following a clash between two groups at Laitumkhrah locality in Shillong. Lyngdoh was joined by the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police. During the early hours of Friday, an argument between two groups took place near the DHS office, after which they arrived at the Laitumkhrah Police Station to file an FIR. According to SP Sylvester Nongtnger, one group wanted to file an FIR while the other refused, which then led to an altercation. Over time, a mob assembled, some entered the station while some were outside and it was then that one police vehicle was set ablaze. Nongtnger also informed that they have been able to identify the miscreants and police will be taking necessary actions. Allegations were also levelled against the police for not accepting the FIR of the other group and that CrPF personnel used force. Situation intensified in Meghalaya’s Shillong on Monday after police summoned leaders of the Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation alleging that their ‘black uniform’ constituted a violation of Section 171 CrPc. As a sign of protest, several HITO members gathered near the State Bank of India's main branch before proceeding to the Sadar Police Station in Shillong. The members were also seen sloganeering while condemning the police action. The situation intensified after a clash broke out between the protestors. As per police, two Deputy Superintendent of Police suffered minor injuries after protesters resorted to pelting stones and bottles towards the police. As part of its fight to end the drug menace in the state, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of Meghalaya‘s East Khasi Hills District on Tuesday apprehended 5 women and 32 men during a raid carried out at the Polo market area of Shillong. Users and peddlers were rounded up by the police after recovering syringes and drugs from their possession. The ANTF seized 105 vials of heroin weighing 8.97 gm, 286.93 gm of cannabis, 20 Nitrazepam tablets, 330 empty vials, 10 syringes, 3 empty Golden Tobacco containers, 6 mobile phones, 1 scooter, 2 local taxis, and cash of Rs 1,49,280. During the raid, the police arrested one female and five male drug peddlers. Along with them 27 drug users who came to buy drugs were also apprehended. Four women who obstructed the police during the raid were also picked up. Members of the East Khasi Hills Local Taxi Welfare Association on Saturday attempted to enter the Sadar Police Station to ascertain the identity of those arrested on Friday evening. Members of the association wanted to let the eyewitnesses identify the miscreants since they are sceptical about the police’s intention. However, the association members were met with tight security as CRPF and police personnel were seen guarding the gates and any entry inside the police station was restricted. Later after negotiating, five members of the association were allowed to enter the police station to identify those arrested. Following a discussion, the members of the association confirmed to the gathering that they had met the officer-in-charge who showed them the identification details of those arrested. CTTV camera footage has revealed that an unidentified man walked into a warehouse in the Mawlonghat area of Shillong before casually walking away with a mobile phone kept on top of a box. After the theft came to light, the phone owner, identified as one Shambhu Thapa, filed a formal complaint at the Cantonment Police Beat House in the city. In the aftermath of the incident, locals of Mawlonghat complained to EastMojo that thefts are all too common in the area and the culprits often manage to evade arrest. "Thefts are reported here from time to time. Mobile phones and cash get stolen quite frequently here," stated a local, while another informed, "Drug addicts in the area often make way with cell phones and cash here. Yesterday, we managed to catch a lad who stole money, but another thief who stole a mobile phone managed to flee. We suspect that he gave it to someone else. We caught the thief, but we could not find the mobile phone." Shillong witnessed tense scenes after two taxi drivers were allegedly assaulted following an altercation with miscreants. The incident took place in the Khyndailad area, popularly known as Police Bazar, late on Thursday evening, where six people hit the two taxi drivers. Irked by the incident, the taxi drivers in the Khyndailad area suspended services on Friday morning, demanding immediate action against those involved. This also led to the disruption of traffic movement in the area. The two drivers whose identities are yet to be ascertained are admitted to the Civil Hospital and are currently undergoing treatment. Meanwhile, tension also prevailed at Punjabi Colony in Ïewduh after members of several civil society organisations gathered in the area demanding the arrest of the accused. After witnessing tense scenes and a day-long suspension of taxi services, the situation in Shillong is limping back to normalcy. This was after the special cell of East Khasi Hills along with Assam police nabbed five people from Guwahati in connection with the case where two taxi drivers identified as 27-year-old Iohborlang Kharsohnoh and 25-year-old Banshai Syiem were assaulted by a group of miscreants late on Thursday night at Khyndailad area, popularly known as Police Bazar. Following the incident, Kharsohnoh and Syiem were rushed to the Civil Hospital for medical attention. Following a minor scuffle between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Shillong, the Meghalaya police led by Director General Police (DGP) LR Bishnoi on Friday held an interaction with the leaders and student leaders of the two communities to ensure that peace is maintained. The DGP informed that leaders of both communities assured full cooperation with the police officers. The Meghalaya police have also identified six localities or areas in Shillong where the two communities are residing in places like Happy Valley, Nongthymmai, Laitumkhrah, Madanryting and others the police will carry out patrolling. The interaction was held in Nongrim Hills Naga Durbar Hall, Shillong and was attended by district police along with the DGP and students of the Meitei and Kuki communities of Shillong. "We have decided there should not be any misunderstanding among the communities in Shillong and other parts of Meghalaya. We thought it wise as a preventive step to invite the community leaders and student leaders of the two communities. We expressed our concern about any kind of mistrust or misunderstanding," mentioned Bishnoi. He explained that they invited both communities to the Laitumkhrah police station on Thursday evening after the scuffle and community leaders assured to maintain peace and order. The 16 persons have been released after the execution of bonds from both sides under Section 107 & 109 CrPC, the police have allowed them to go back, ensuring peace. The DGP also informed that the Meghalaya students in Manipur are safe and are in constant touch with senior officials of Manipur. "Today I spoke to DGP Manipur and they assured full safety to the citizens, and today a charter plane has flown to Imphal to evacuate students of Meghalaya. A fierce gunfight ensued in Tikrikilla of West Garo Hills as police battled criminals suspected of abducting two individuals from Assam. Two criminals have been killed in the encounter, police said. Police have also confirmed that the kidnapped duo, Bikas Chetia from Guwahati and an unidentified child from Goalpara district, are safe. The investigation was initially carried out based on complaints filed in Assam. It was found that the victims were abducted by a gang, members of which hail from both Meghalaya and Assam. Based on the findings of the investigation, police in Meghalaya launched a counter-insurgency operation on Wednesday. A team of Meghalaya police spotted the gang holed out at the Dibru Hills Forest Reserve near Bamandanga. Upon being discovered, the gang opened fire on police and a gun battle ensued. The exchange of fire continued for approximately 3 minutes. Once the exchange of fire stopped, two unidentified dead bodies were recovered by police. An AK series rifle and a pistol, along with ammunition, were found near the corpses. Harijan Panchayat Committee secretary Gurjit Singh has expressed dismay at the Meghalaya government’s failure to include their demands in the blueprint for relocation of 342 families from Punjabi Lane. Singh accused the Conrad Sangma-led government of pressurising the committee to accept the relocation blueprint. Last Thursday, the Harijan Panchayat Committee even sent a reply to the government on the blueprint. The Harijan Panchayat Committee on Thursday sent a reply to Meghalaya government on the blueprint for the relocation of residents of Punjabi Lane, Shillong. The committee after multiple rounds of consultation with its members has stated that the proposal of the government was “incomplete, unsuitable, unprepared, unfair and undemocratic.” "We feel that the public will turn against us with the kinds of statements the govt is giving. This is a time consuming issue and the government had stated that the settlement would be complete within April and that relocation would begin from May. The site earmarked by the government, where they have 84 units, are currently housing government employees," said Singh. He also said that the residents staying at Sweepers Colony should be given time to shift to the new location. Earlier, the HPC had sent an exhaustive 6-page reply to the Deputy Secretary of the Government of Meghalaya and to other departments concerned. The two boys, identified as Rahul Chettri and Hibor Lalu had gone to the river on Monday afternoon to take bath. However, they went missing later. Assam-based taxi driver Sujit Sinha managed to avoid certain death in Shillong, after miscreants poured petrol on his vehicle amid heightened tensions following the death of six people, including a forest officer, in West Jaintia Hills' Mukrow village. Now recovering from the ordeal, Sinha shared his experience with EastMojo. A car with an Assam number plate was burnt in Meghalaya’s capital Shillong on Tuesday evening after miscreants asked the passengers to leave the vehicle. Some taxi drivers, who returned to Guwahati on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, said that the Meghalaya Police escorted them to the Assam border, but still, stones were pelted on their vehicles by onlookers while on the move. Earlier, Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma, whose party is an ally of the BJP, complained that the Assam police and forest guards “entered Meghalaya and resorted to unprovoked firing”. Assam Police officials, however, asserted that the truck was intercepted in West Karbi Anglong district of the state by a forest department team and a mob from Meghalaya had later attacked the forest guards and policemen from the state, which led to firing by the Assam side to bring the situation under control. Five of the six killed at Mukroh village in West Jaintia Hills district were Meghalaya residents and one is an Assam Forest guard, Sangma said. The Meghalaya CM announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased from his state.
