Whatever you need a website for, create yours today with Wix: 🤍 What are some of the most disturbing wikipedia pages? As you probably know, a wiki is a website which consists of collaborations of people modifying content. The most popular of these sites is none other than Wikipedia. It was launched on January 15, 2001, by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. The former once said, “Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what we're doing.” And they did a good job. You can find 301 languages on Wikipedia, but the English language version is easily the biggest. Right now, in English you can find 5.7 million articles, and 46 million pages, which have been edited 860 million times and looked at by 1,203 admins. It’s not surprising then, that there’s some weird stuff you can find on Wikipedia. And that’s what we’ll look at today, in this episode of the Infographics Show, the Scariest Wikipedia articles. Relationships between articles in different languages offer opportunities in terms of comparison and verification of the quality of information provided by various Wikipedia communities. Quality of data in DBpedia depends on underlying information provided in Wikipedia’s infoboxes. Various language editions can provide different information about given subject with respect to set of attributes and values of these attributes. Research question is which language editions provide correct values for each attribute so that data fusion can be carried out.

This seminar by Northwestern University professor Darren Gergle is part of a lecture series called Design at Large organized by CSE Prof. Scott Klemmer in the Qualcomm Institute of Calit2 at UC San Diego. Abstract: Everyday people produce an extraordinary amount of user-generated content in social media systems such as Wikipedia, Flickr, and Facebook. There is great opportunity for such data to help provide global coverage of a variety of topics. Yet, there is also a risk that language barriers and coverage biases present in the data can limit the information available to certain user communities. In this talk, I will present research that illustrates both the challenges and opportunities of user-generated content in the context of multilingual Wikipedia. First, I will present studies that empirically assess the content diversity and coverage biases that exist across numerous language editions of Wikipedia. Next, I will demonstrate the effects these coverage biases can have on end-user technologies. Finally, I will introduce Omnipedia - a system that highlights the opportunities such data present for designing a new class of global technologies.

Some of the terms listed below (such as "Gringo", "Yank", etc.) are used by many people all over the world as part of their ordinary speech or thinking without any intention of causing offence. For the purposes of this list, an ethnic slur is a term designed to insult others on the basis of race, ethnicity, or nationality. Each term is listed followed by its country or region of usage, a definition, and a reference to that term. Ethnic slurs may also be produced as a racial epithet by combining a general-purpose insult with the name of ethnicity, such as "dirty Jew", "Russian pig", etc. Other common insulting modifiers include "dog", "filthy", etc. Such terms are not included in this list.
